Should I buy this and a watameter for a $100.00? Is the camera fixable if it breaks? How is the picture compared to a Bessa with an m rokkor 40mm? Strange question I know, but I am just starting to spend money on a rangefinder kit and then I saw this thing. I am thinking I should just ignore the gas attack and enjoy my new rokkor 40mm. Any opinions?

Enjoy your Rokkor for a while. There will be other 6x4.5 and 6x6 Ikontas, Nettars, Mess Ikontas and Super Ikontas lying in wairing for you when you have had your fill of the Rokkor. There are so many Zeiss folders its bewildering. Spend time researching which one you would like (rangefinder or not, coupled or not, Novar or Tessar lens etc etc). Then go about buying a good one, recently CLA'd. Yes there are repairmen out there. Yes MF can give stunning results even with uncoated triplet lenses at the lower end, and better still with the Tessars.

I found one of these in mint condition at a garage sale for $20. It's nice, but I'm not sure if it's $100 nice. Maybe if it wasn't scale focus I'd like it more. I recall at the time, they were selling on ebay for around $30-50.

I guess it is a bit much. It is local though, so that is nice. It also comes with an external rangefinder, but I am still thinking about it. Does any one Know if the viewfinder is big or is it squinty?

Don't know about the 517, but the 521 and 523 aren't bad at all.

If you get to fondle it first hand, check that the shutter, bellows and lens are good to go. If the lens is the Novar I would hesitate a guess you could clean it yourself, shutter and bellows however would require more knowledge and skill.

Have in mind everything is manual, everything. Not even cocking the shutter is coupled to the winder. I don't think the 517 even has double exposure protection. Which in some cases isn't a bad thing. Uncoated lens of course.
