ZM 21 vs Leica 21

On the M8, there is an obvious advantage of buying the Leica 6bit coded Elmarit because of the pending cyan corner corrections promised in FW 1.10.

Is there a cyan corner problem with both lenses or just with the Elmarit?

From what I hear they apparently are quite different construction-wise, and if problems occur just with the Elmarit there will be obviously no advantage over the Biogon here.

No problem with the Biogon if you don't use IR filters. Use IR filters on the Biogon and you'll have the fringing issue. That said you can hand code the Biogon... save your money, get the Biogon, and get a Leica lens that is clearly superior like a Summicron or a Summilux.

Hi Ted,

Not fringing actually, but cyan drift. As you know, it's a phenomena one will see with any 35 mm or wider lens when using a 486 filter.

Oh no, another problem I've just realised after reading some stuff on the net, is that the M8 also uses the frame line selector position to determine what focal length is in use. Because the Zeiss 21 selects a different frameline to that of the Leica 21, there is no way a home coding can realistically trick the camera into doing the relevant internal corrections. Roll on the C1 upgrade and, hopefully, open in camera lens selection, I say.

yes, according to those at LUF who have coded their own lenses, you also have to hold the frame leaver in the correct position for the camera to write the correct date in the EXIF file. Apparently Zeiss are able to swap the lens mount for that of a 28mm (?) to bring up the correct lines, but I'm not sure what this costs.

Zeiss quote via e-mail from their HQ in Germany: change ZM 25 mount to ZM 35 mount for 40 Euros (shipping and applicable customs duties extra.)
