ZM C Sonnar 50mm vs CV Nokton 50mm

Sorry, Akiva,
Not an answer, but a specific question related to your questions, for when someone does answer:
I have the same question, but am particularly interested in the question of flare. Using my Nokton, I shot a concert last night where there was quite a bit of backlighting, and where it was not possible to avoid shooting directly into the spots on some occasion. I am wondering how the Sonnar might perform in such a situation.
My experience with Zeiss lenses is limited to the Contax T2 and T3 point and shoots. The T2 was especially good in similar situations.

The Nokton will be sharper wide open due to the double aspheric element and the modified double Gauss design. These two things make it far better in correcting spherical aberration that's responsible for the focus shift found in the 50 C Sonnar. The C Sonnar will be more flare resistant due to the fact that it isn't a double Gauss design and to a much smaller extent, uses the T* coating, probably the best in the industry. Stopped down beyond f/3.5, they should perform similarly.

I get quite a few half moon flares with my c sonnar with the hood mounted. Much more than any other lens and on par with my tele elmarit. This is, imo, not a lens you want to use without a hood. Cant comment on the nokton.

flare and the Nokton 1.5

flare and the Nokton 1.5

No experience with the Sonnar C, and only 1 day with the Nokton 1.5 in daylight, but it does flare relatively easily when shooting sunlit backlit situations with the sun.

Not quite whitewashed flare like that from an old I-50/I-22 type lens, but much more of a washout and/or rainbow or aperture effect than the 35/2 asph cron, hexanon m 50/2, v4cron, rokkor cle, 75 summilux, noctilux 1.0, or zeiss 28/2.8, but indoor milder backlit stage lighting might be something it can handle ok, I've seen a few OK photos in these settings from this lens.

Overall a great lens for when not encountering harsh flare conditions. I have seen some good low light stage backlit photos from this lens.

Sorry, Akiva,
