ZM Sonnar 50/1.5 and Nikkor 50/1.4

I have some negatives somewhere like yours. Bright light at about 2 o'clock and just above lens level. Then somebody mentioned closing down maybe 1/3 to 1/2 stop. It really works. I won't tell that your using a 50mm 1.8 lens!

Focus shift under 6'? I don't think so. The welder was maybe 5' from the lens, probably less. I focused on the flames on his helmet. They are sharp.

for those who is in Singapore, can come and look for me. I can show you both old zeiss 50/1.5 and nikkor 50/1.4. if needed, i can sell mine to you as well. hee

For those who experienced focus shift, is it front or back focusing.

I have one listed on classified but I am thinking about keeping it as I really like the look of the pictures. Could someone also shows the swirly bokeh images?

Just a comment on the flare of the classic LTM Nikkor: try to close the aperture just a little (less than half a stop) and most of the (veiling) flare (and vignetting) you observe wide open will disappear, and the lens will then have nice contrast, too.

Hi Roland, I never knew that a little stopping down goes a long way for this lens..definitely a nice tip to remember.

Tim, there are also the Nikkor 5cm f2 and the Canon f1.5 Sonnars.

I am not sure which Nikkor you are referring to : it does not look to me like the Millenium Nikkor is a Sonnar design, however I don't have the Nikkor - you should ask Jsuominen who has these lenses, and AFAIK he is fond of both.

Modern Millennium Nikkor-S 50/1.4 is not a Sonnar design. Actually the formula is not known. Here is a reply concerning the issue:

I have shot with Millennium Nikkor - there are only Nikon S-mount version of it - and here are my photos:

More info about the lens here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jsuominen/2982777919/

I have also S-mount versions of older Nikkor-S.C 5cm/1.4 - from 1950's - and modern Zeiss-C Sonnar 50/1.5 T* for Nikon S-mount. Photos shot with them are here:

Vintage Nikkor-S.C 5cm/1.4 is a Sonnar design lens. Does it have a focus shift or not at wide open? Maybe, maybe not... I shoot only with film, so it's difficult to say. 🙂 Here is one sample http://flickr.com/photos/53094145@N00/1367417170/
