Zorki 1 Problem

Hi All;
I recently purchased a Zorki 1 which appeared to be in excellent condition. When I loaded it with film, I discovered the following problem. The take-up spool it came with must be very worn, as it is very loose, and does not have enough tension to advance the film to the next frame. I tried using the spool from my Zorki 4, and it does turn when the film is advanced, however it is so tight that it requires pliers to remove after the film is rewound. Has anyone there seen this problem before, and if so, is there a solution?
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,
I've just checked my Zorki 1 and Zorki 4 & 5 The 4 & 5 use different types of take up spool than the 1. These have a spool which is engaged by a couple of slots in the shaft which fits into the spool. The spools from the 4 has corresponding pips inside which fit into the slots. The clutch arrangement is within the shaft on the 4. My Zorki 1 (1952 ish) has a plain metal take up spool which is a push fit onto the shaft. Have you simply got the wrong spools? or one which is nearly right but not for that camera?

Dave...

Edit, the Zorki 4 & 5 are similar.

just looked at my FED NKVD, Zorki 5 and Zenit C. The Zenit & Zorki both have a kind of splined shaft and the spools have the internal "pips" to locate on it, but the FED has a push-on spool and a plain shaft. I can't look at the Zorki 1 since it has film in it; from memory it has the splines though.

Must be more variations around than you might think!
