Hi,
this is my 'project' Zorki 4.
It came in horrible state. Now it's fast shutter speeds are fine, slow speeds still don't work, the VF is clear that you wouldn't believe it's the same camera
Just recently I put it back together. I hope the paint will last, since I didn't strip down the chrome (completely), I just sandpaper-ed it a lot, sprayed 3 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint.
What would you suggest - how should I fill the engravings?
PS: And since it has 'ears' (straplugs) I think it's gonna be my second main user camera... (after CV Bessa R).

Very nice Spyderman, may I suggest white, or a comradley red for the engraving. JimG

yep get a commy red pen or very thin brush and paint and fill in those markings.
Excellent though, i love it
EDIT: alternatively, get a pin or sharp knife and 'engrave' the markings, scratching out the paint to reveal the shiny metal beneath?

Take-up Spool Wanted !
Take-up Spool Wanted !
One more thing: The camera came without take-up spool
Does anyone here have a spare take-up spool for Zorki-4 from a "parts" camera? I can offer a "parts" silver Jupiter-8 for trade.

Nope, that won't work. First I don't have a credit card and so can't even register on the Evilbay
and second the spools are probably for Zorki 1 - bottom loaders

Wow! Nice work Spyderman. I like how you kept some areas with the original finish.Spyderman said:What would you suggest - how should I fill the engravings?
You can check out this link http://www.yevglad.com/repaint/Painting_Instructions_Final.pdf that lubitel has been so kind to post up for me. I have a little write up on how to fill in the engravings.

Spyderman,
Nice job on your Zorki! Red would be my choice for the engravings.
The only extra take up spool I have is from a Kiev no idea if it will work in a Zorki but if you want to try it, PM me your address and I'll send it.

Well, not until I buy another camera that would need such treatmentRobin A said:Will you be doin more?
I have already done a FED-3b, because the paint on it would chip off on even a slight touch. It seems those guys in FED factory just sprayed one coat of paint over raw metal. No primer, no multiple coats...
Well, this was not so very intentional, but I didn't want to remove all parts from the top plate (not the top cover, which is obviously painted, but the one I left in chrome). I didn't dare to remove all parts. And I thought when I leave also the bottom in chrome, it might actually look good. So in the end it was just my fear that caused this camera to look like it looks noww3rk5 said:I like how you kept some areas with the original finish.
Nope. I didn't have any leather of the apropriate thickness at hand. So I used a selfadhesive vinyl foil sold in shop with wallpapers and such stuff. It's easy and clean to work with.Austintatious said:Did you replace the covering with leather?
Thanks, but I'm almost sure the Kiev spool wouldn't work.rbiemer said:The only extra take up spool I have is from a Kiev no idea if it will work in a Zorki but if you want to try it, PM me your address and I'll send it.
I see there's a spool in classifieds, but for $10 + shipping? No thanks.

If you can find an old broken Zenit E or B, the take up spool inside is the same as for the Zorki 4. You have to disamble the Zenit to get the take up spool out. I mean the older E types, the ones made before '75. (They changed the take up spool later with the ones you find on the 4-K.)
Also check the camera for light leaks, my Zorki 4 was leaking light through the back. A thin black cord is fitted in the sleeves of the back preventing light from coming in. It can be replaced easily.

and do Zorki spools work on kievs? I'm about to get my gran's '63 Zorki4 and don't have any spool...
otherwise, an Ilford film can spool can be used, they have a hole in the middle (unlike the kodak ones), all you have to do is cut the film a bit so as to get a a tongue in the middle, and not on the side.
Eveybody's following? :s

Zorki spools do not work on Kiev's, my father has a pre war contax and it works with a double film cassete system, or a special take up spool from Zeiss.

So I filled the engravings with white, (didn't have any red paint at home). From a distance it looks good, but from closer, I am not completely satisfied with it
The other picture is my previous project FED 3. The paint on FEd would also chip off on slight touch, so I painted it. The FED was painted with glossy black, the Zorki with satin black. The Zorki looks better

PS: Wanna know why the ring around the rangefinder window on FED 3 is also black? well, it's because I used pliers to loosen it... :bang: so then I just had to paint it
And also just now I realized that they look like negative of each other: the FED is grey/silver with black stripes, the Zorki is black with silver stripes

35mm film cassete spools do NOT work on the Zorki 4 as take up spools.
these will work with minor modificatons, on the Kiev rf models up to the 4 and 4a models, and probably on the pre and post war rf Zeiss Contax cameras.
