Well, I completely tore down and rebult my '57 Z4. Obviously, I missed something in getting it back together. The roll that I put through it would not rewind properly. Eventually, the film tore in the middle. I need to figure out what I left out. I believe that it has to do with loosening the sprocket. The shutter button 'tower' rotates and locks along with the shutter button, but it does not free the sprocket like it should. What did I do wrong? Anybody got some answers????:bang: Thanks
Ken

Oh yeah, wolves, your part goes out tomorrow. I was out of town all last week covering a murder trial and today was a government holiday. Post office will be open tomorrow and your package will go out.

Ken,

Are you sure it's the sprocket not releasing rather than a high tension on the wind spool clutch? If it it's definitely the sprocket, have a look at the two spacers that fit inside below the collar of the rewind - over the shutter release rod. They bear on the rewind mechanism and release the dog clutch. It'd be easy to lose one of them. It's also possible (I think) to put the release rod in upside down so it wouldn't release the clutch. I'll take a look later at my CLA thread to see which pictures show these parts. That's my initial thoughts, from memory, of how that bit works. If you've lost a spacer I can find you a spare!

Thanks for the spring, I had wondered if you'd sent it but I guessed you might have been busy.

I figured that it had to do with the sprocket. It does not turn at all when I try to rewind the film. I am now using a test roll to see if I change anything with the different modifications. If I cannot get it to work later today, I will post a picture of what I have and the order of the parts inside the shutter release.

Ken,

Photos 30 and 32 in the Zorki 4K CLA thread (about halfway down page 1) show the parts you should have, 30 shows the shutter release and the two spacers I mentioned, laid out in order. These spacers push down on the dog-clutch (seen in photo 32) to release it and the sprocket drive. This is the most likely area to be causing the problems. The lower spacer may well not have come out if the grease was hardened. Before you dismantle too far, take the screw out of the rewind collar (watch out for the flying spring and shutter button!). Is there now a springiness to pushing the collar straight down?

How far did you strip the camera? To get access to the sprocket internals you'll have to pull the top plate off and have the whole shutter mechanism fall apart...NOT fun!

First, the camera was completely stripped down to nothing. It was but a pile of parts a short while ago. I thought that I followed the exact steps backwards to get it put together. Obviously I missed something. I got it working properly. I think that the second collar around the shutter shaft was too small. I took it apart this morning and messed around with it a bit. I tried using the shutter release parts from a Z4k, but no go. I then put the some of the parts from the Z4 in with some of the parts from the Z4k and it worked like a charm. Loaded up the test roll and I have gone through it twice. Both times the rewind was hassle free. Wolves, your part was dropped at the post office around noon midwest USA time. Delivery should only take 6-10 days. Hopefully, you will see the part by mid-next-week. Hope it works out. If you don't see it, let me know as I have a second one in reserve that I can send out as well.

Well, at least you have it working again, good to hear!

Thanks in advance for the part, I'll PM you when it gets here. It'll deifinitely make an improvement and it will fit, I've established that already.
