Zorki 6 / Jupiter 8 Problem

Help!

I seem to have a Jupiter 8 that has a rangefinder cam that won't work with my Zorki 6. I have bought the Jupiter 8 to replace a tatty Industar 50mm f3.5 which came on the camera.

BUT setting the rangefinder on a distant object the lens scale readss 15 meters. setting it on an object 1.8 meters away the lens scale reads 1.6 meters. Doing the same with the Industar gives me correct lens scale readings.

Comparing the rangefinder cams at the back of the lenses I find they are different - with both lenses set at infinity the Jupiter 8 cam will penetrate about 0.2mm (0.008") further into the camera then the Industar.

Serial numbers - Jupiter 8 8205778, Industar 6511750, Zorki 6 650055186.

Suggestions would be very welcome.

Tried altering th eposition of the cam follower behind the lens - no improvement.

Found a tiny screw behind the left hand front nameplate screw (looking at the front of the camera) - turning this seems to alter the rangefinder setting. Eureka?

errr...I thought the lens were collaminated to the bodies individually. Does this kind of switch work?

I use a Kiev, the rangefinder is coupled by rotation of the lens and not the in-out movement. IMO, it is more simple and clever. (Wonders why nobody uses this design)

I suppose your Jupiter 8 has been disassembled for service and badly reassembled ? sometimes people screw back the focusing rings in a messy order ...

Nope - the Jupiter 8 looks as though it hasn't been "maintained". There is definitely adjustment on the rangefinder cam follower - through the left hand label screw. I wonder if they had to calibrate for diferent lenses - I guess it was made in the days when different factories made left shoes and right shoes.....and...............

Hi Vince,

In your original post you said that the Industar lens that came with the camera focused OK at infinity and close range. If you have taken pics with that lens and they look good, then the new J8 lens is the problem, not the camera.

Altering the infinity adjustment screw to try to bring the J8 into proper infinity focus won't help. You need to return all adjustments back the way they were with the Industar lens, and then fix the J8.

Again, if the photos with the Industar were OK as to focus, then the cam on the J8 should have the same extension measuring from the lens mount mating surface at each scale marking on the lens matching that of the Industar lens.

You can probably find info on the web showing how to fix the J8.
