Hello

On 1/30th the second curtain stops half way, and then closes slowly. All other speeds seem fine, and exposures were fine last time I used the camera (didnt use it on 30th though). I figured the curtain needs tension adjustment, but if that were the case, wouldn't the other speeds be off as well? The shutter speed knob only turns half way once I trigger the shutter. It continues its travel when I release the button, though the second curtain has already been released. Maybe something wrong with internal gearing? I should also mention that it doesnt happen all the time. Its hard to explain. It only happens on 1/30th, which is a speed I rarely use. I wonder how big is the chance that other speeds will be affected too soon?

Likely culprits are dirt/film debris in the restrictor gears or in the path of the curtain laths. Releasing the button releases the second curtain and this may assist in closing the first. I've just sorted a problem of a similar nature on my Zorki 5 but this didn't close at all until the button was released. On that camera, the first curtain was not releasing the second, meaning that the mechanism stalled completely until the button was released. This affected only 1/250 and sometimes 1/500 and I don't think it's the same problem as you have.

Generally it seems that the slow speeds are affected first by dirt and lack of lubrication. It's possible that your problem has causes (like dried grease/oil) in other places but I'd check the obvious first...

As Wolves says, debris and dry mechs are favourites for this. The 30th speed is a bit of a special case, unlike the other, faster speeds, the first curtain has reached the other side and may have stopped moving before the second is released. This means that, unlike all the other speeds, the second curtain is unable to start its movement whilst loosely coupled to the overlapping ribbons of the first, so has to have enough tension and unrestricted paths to get started.
The fact that it resumes its travel when you release the shutter button is key here, as this "should" have little effect on the curtain once released, so could to be a problem with lube and debris down near the restrictor gears and release shaft.
A good clean & lube could be needed.

Speaking of a Zorki 6, the one I just bought is bad. Unfortunately, I believe that it was me that made it that way. The take-up spool does not spin. I believe that it did for the first couple of hours I had it. It jammed on me and in the process of taking it apart the gears stripped. Now, the shutter cocks, but the spool does not advance. Any tips or tricks. I was going to contact Alex on ebay and see if he has a parts 6, but I can not get the top cover off now. I fear I may have to drill out the gears.

I'm afraid I can't advise you at all on the Z6, mine needed nothing more than a rangefinder adjustment when I bought it so I've never even had the top off. There are some pics that may help at:

Did you turn the retaining ring round the shutter button the wrong way?
Tsk tsk....
Did that on mine, should be a left hand thread, mine felt like a coffee grinder when I'd finished. I drilled a small hole under the wind lever, with the idea that I could poke something in to jam up the gears and take the lefty thingy off. Didn't work. In the end, having bought a Zenit 3 for the bits (actually, I bought three before I found one bad enough to wreck for spares!) As the spare came with all gears and the wind lever etc, I hacksawed the ring off. I would be real interested in the experiences of others who got theirs off.
PS when you finally get it together, make sure that you only hand tighten the ring, as it's self tightening as you use it.

Actually, I did turn it the right way, but it was already sounding like a coffee grinder when it turned before I started the top removal. It perplexed me so because I had bookmarked the removal instructions, just so I wouldn't screw up the gears... I guess I will just get out the dremel. Anybody got any Z6 parts??

Actually, I just need this part

I need the brass shaft to the far right of the shot. This is the shutter release/lock. I had enough extra parts from my Z4Ks that I was able to replace the other gears that were stripped, but in the process of removal, I killed the threads and the retaining ring that attach to them. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need to email Oleg and find out if he might have the parts.
