Slightly flip article. While I appreciate the attempts at humour, it might ahve been worth pointing out that the Kiev was actually a 30s German design (and was not in fact a Kiev 5), and that the latches were therefore based on a U-boat, not a ruski nuclear submarine. .
he could have got better jokes if he knew anything about Kievs, actually, considering that the americans got the Saturn 5 rocket, and all Uncle Joe got was a camera!

The article is not really objective, and the humour is senseless in my opinion. Like other things coming from Russia are being made fun of. I've read many better camera reviews than this one. But thanks for the posting anyway! 🙂

I agree with you guys, it would have lift up the author's professionalism if he didn't write the article with the intention of sort-of mocking the cameras to begin with.
I always thought the Russian-made cameras are the "underdog" in the camera history, yes, the build quality and quality control may not be up to German or Japan standard, but they are good quality cameras that takes good pictures. To me, that's all that matters.
I have a Kiev 4AM and the Helios 103 lens. That combo really gives me the feeling of using a camera that are designed and crafted by peopel who really love photography. A very different feeling than when I pick up a modern DLSR.

It's nice to see an article about the old Russian cameras in the mainstream photographic press but let's have more research and professionalism and less American xenophobia. The guy gripes about putting your finger infront of the finder window on the Kiev. I don't even own any of these cameras and know about the "Contax grip". Didn't he even know that the Kiev is a Contax copy - almost exactly the same design?
I'm so glad that we have the Internets and "the Google". You learn so much more from a forum like this than some xenophobic hackneyed article where the camera snob author spends more time trying (and failing) to "be clever" than doing basic research.
