Question about an M6/Summicron 50mm f2

I don't currently own a Leica rangefinder but have wanted to try one for a while. I've been offered an M6 that's described by the current owner the following way.

"Leica M6 w/Summicron f2.0 lens in virtually unused condition. Both the camera and the lens are black. The camera was purchased from a Leica dealer and has never been used. A roll of film was placed in the camera to show how it should be loaded, but it was not exposed. Both the camera and the lens are in the original boxes and are in exquisite condition."

Assuming the camera and lens are as described, would an asking price of $1850 US be reasonable? KEH shows an M6 in EX condition for around $1400 US and a 50mm F2 Summicron in LN condition for around $900 US. This would seem to make this offer a good deal.

On a more general note, would this combination make a good intro to the Leica M world? I've lots of experience with Nikon SLRs but the rangefinder world is new to me.

Assuming the camera and lens as described it seems to me a reasonable price!

This combination would make an excellent intro to the Leica M world!

The M rangefinder is a qood combination with a Nikon SLRs!

Then you have the best of two camera worlds 🙂
 
If you can see the actual camera/lens before purchase and it is in as described condition go for it.
 
Sounds like a perfectly good price, but some use might be better than no use. An unused M6 is more likely to need lubrication, etc (CLA) than one that has been used lightly over the years. You might want to find out if it's an early M6 classic or one of the later M6 TTL's. There are differences. I much prefer the late production M6 classic over the TTL but others would want the TTL....
 
Alan, the price seems fair - but budget for a probable CLA if it's sat this long without use. $300 or so to DAG or Sherry, and you'll have a heck of a deal!
 
Alan, i'm a suspicious type and that description sounds very much like one that I got interested in. Turned out to be a complete scam with seller only accepting western union. Out of interest is this on the Esite or is it in a shop.
My advice is tread carefully and unless you can pick it up yourself or buy it off someone here don't bother! Just my experience, good luck
 
And also, some Summicrons are worth more than others. Have a look at it if you can - ask for photos and get as much information you can as to which version of 'Cron and what serial number the body is. M6s were made over a long period of time and the lenses for even longer.
