Go to the old city with an RF. And enjoy the good food there.

As for focal lengths, 35 works best for me in cities, but it is a very personal choice.

From my limited experience and hazy memory of my visit, I'd say that yes, you do have a good location.

Yes, that's dead center!

5 minutes walk from beautiful Old Montreal (where a 21mm is best!)
2 minutes walk China Town (Go eat at "Pho Bang New York"!! The best Vietnamese restaurant! I'm crazy for their food!)
10 Minutes walk from Chic downtown (Ste-Catherine corner McGill, which is on the west side of Viger).
2 Minutes walk from gay village (actually a very cool spot to visit)! Gay village starts on Ste-Catherine and Viger approximately, and extends to the East side)

Go out on Cresecent at night (2 minutes from Ste-Catherine corner McGill) and on St-Laurent corner Prince-Arthur (5 minutes from 99 Viger).

Enjoy the strip joints all along Ste-Catherine but prefferably on Ste-Catherine near Crescent!

The city is divided by East and West sides. The dividing street is St-Laurent Boulevard, from which all addresses start at 1. The address 99 means you're right at the center (well, a little East, actually).

So yes, 99 Viger is a good spot. Have fun!

schwartz's deli is a bit of a must when in montreal. be prepared for very, very cramped quarters and a line up. you're in a very good location and fairly centralized... the metro however pretty much run's everywhere and is easy to find and ride. as for places to shoot it really depends a lot on your style... the st henri/marche atwater area is definately the "grit" end of the shooting scale. old montreal is very scenic and quite a bit like wandering the streets of montmarte when it comes to architecture (except the shops selling REAL maple syrup and sweatshirts saying CANADA or MONTREAL). i personally would highly recommend the marche jean talon if it's a short visit (especially on a weekend), st catherine with all the shoppers and tourists or head way up into the mile end and sniff out st viateur bagels. all this is accesible by metro. the NDG is pretty cool as well as far as the big city, mixed culture low income neighbourhood thing goes.
as far as eating well that's what montreal is all about... i personally recommend joe beef. un-pretentious and awesome food! but there really is so many places it's mind boggling. the pho bang new york, down in china town is a must as well.
when
as far as i can tell montreal doesn't really have a "don't go there hood". i'm from vancouver and lived a big portion of my life around the downtown eastside so my idea of a "don't go there hood" and someone else's may vary.

I'd also be doing the camera store thing. I think Photocan (auction site moniker) is nearby (NB23 ?) , good prices on Domke bags. I'd also park myself somewhere and just sit and people watch and shoot a few frames between sips. When ya going ?

They're in Pointe Claire so a short drive from where you are. I presume the prices @ their store should be the same or close to their online prices. ymmv however.

They come highly recommended from a friend who used to work at Le Journal de Montreal. I'll probably order from them at some point in the future as their prices kill anything I can get in Toronto.
