Three (3) Masterpiece Lenses to Own ?

Three masterpiece lenses?

Summicron 75 AA, Summilux 50 Asph, Elmarit 24 Asph or Biogon 25 (they seem to be on a par save for price, so the advantage is for the Biogon, which also focuses very usefully down to .50m) are all flawless with the Summicon 75 AA andf Summilux 50 Asph. quite possibly on a class of their own.

For a two lens kit, the Summilux 50 Asph and the Summilux 35 Asph. are the ones I want to have. The Summilux 35 Asph. is the sweetest lens I have ever tried, regardless of focal length, but it is not a 'masterpiece' in the way the three (well, four) lenses above are.

My dream three-lens set: 35mm Summilux ASPH, 50mm Noctilux and 75mm Summilux.

What I have: 35mm Summicron ASPH, Canon 50mm/1.4 LTM, and a 75mm Summilux.

Jim B.

My dream 3 lens set: 21mm/3.4 Super-Angulon, 35mm Summicron ASPH, 105mm/2.5 LTM PC-Nikkor

Make it 4 lens set by including Canon 50mm/1.2 or 1.4 LTM.

Looking for that elusive Super-Angulon now as well as a nice Canon and the set will be complete..

50 pre-aspheric Summilux, 28 Elmarit (type 4) and 21 Elmarit (E60). If I had to take two, I'd take that 50 and the 21. If I had to settle for one I'd take the 28.

21/3.4 super angulon
35/1.4 pre-asph
50/1.4 pre-asph

Should I have the chance to add one more, it would be 28/2.8 elmrit (Ver. I).
Wow! What a day dream to get them all...at one time! It will cost me a fortune!

I am curious, why do some folks prefer the pre-asph 50mm Summilux to the latest aspherical version?

in my opinion it's:
-Planar 45mm G lens (just incredable 3d look)
-Summicron 35mm 4th(OOO Bokeh ooo this bokeh)
-summicron 50 3d

Because the 50mm pre-ASPH, which is not as perfect as the latest ASPH version - renders images in a special way when used wide open. Many call it soft but to my opinion it is more like a lower (micro-)contrast. It goes into the same direction as the Noctilux or Summilux 75mm.

Agreed. They produce such different results especailly at the wider apertures. The sharpness of the ASPH wide-open cannot be matched by the pre-ASPH, but that is the point I think. But the pre-ASPH is not soft, stop it down and it becomes very sharp indeed. Both are terrific!

This kit llooks familiar to me :D I had the Elmarit 28mm vs 3 (just sold it), which is a nice lens, too. The Elmarit 28mm vs 1 is indeed a nice peace of glass ! :)

Would this (latest pre-asph?) version of the lux have the qualities you describe? I've tried the asph lux and liked the results (on the RD-1) but wonder if perhaps I should get this one instead to start with.

one lens kit:

zm 35/2

two lens kit:

zm 25/2,8 and lux 50/1,4

three lens kit:

zm 25/2,8 zm 35/2 lux 50/1,4

four lens kit:

add a zm 50/2 to the threesome above:)

That lens is the screwmount version of the one I (and some others here) have and like. The screwmount version is quite rare, BTW ! If I remember exactly, the optical formular hasn't changed from the version with E43 filter thread to the E46 version, the E46 allows for closer focussing (down to 0.7m) and could have improved coating (but not sure about this).

It is an excellent lens with a closest focus of 0.7M as distinct from 1M for the previous two versions of this lens. Many many people prefer this version for the close focus and it is also thought that the coating is better. This lens is silver so brass barrel and rings = heavy. Also I personally don't like the slide-out lens hood but you may be fine with that. Looks good...

Edit: whoops I didn't see the above post which makes similar points...

Which is the best two lens kit?

Best two lens kit:
Mamiya 7 80mm
Mamiya 7 50mm
(remember 35mm film was not specified)

Best three lens kit:
Above two (w/ Mamiya 7 body of course)
Contax 35mm Planar w G1 body
(nor was it specified they had to fit same body)

I think I could do almost everything with above three lenses. And, do it very well.
