so... i've had the m8 for less than two weeks and it's on it's way somewhere? tomorrow. let me first state that i have been absolutely pleased with all leica products up until this experience BUT my m8 is producing the ole bright vertical line in the bottom right of the frames at pretty much iso 640 and up.
so on to my point... this particulair m8 was going to be A/ my primary shooter and B/ a working camera. i am a little concerned... actually a LOT concerned. i have back-ups but man i don't want to be going through the "send it to solms" bs. i don't want a camera that travels the globe i want a camera that sits comfortably in my hand ready to go. do i stick it out with the m8? do i send it off and wait patiently for it to return? do i just plain well return it?
i blew the budget on this one and i don't have a whole lot of $$$ left over to pay for a round the globe trip fpr the m8. would it be reasonable to contact leica and request they pay for everything?
my theory is if i actually get over how damn pissed i am and decide to keep the m8 in my kit, then i am best to send this one off and make sure it's all done up right!?! thoughts?
man i'm REALLY pissed...
any idea on return time from leica to me in montreal? i do of course realize it would be speculation but if everyones experience is a month or two then i am bailing on the m8.
sorry for m8 bashing but i am TOTALLY dissapointed.

Breathe slowly, in out, very slowly. Inhale, exhale. Slowly. Now send it back be patient. It will be a great camera, just not today. Breathe in and out slowly. Now..... go get drunk as a skunk.

Just a bit curious here...but has anyone with a M8 NOT had absolutely any problems with their camera...???
Is this a problem with other digital cameras or is Leica the only one experiencing this...???
What I've read in RFF about the M8, I would not buy one or would wait until they sort all their problems out...
I have seen some shots taken with this camera and I am very impressed with what it can do...but at what cost do you finally get to that point...???

nikon_sam I've owned my M8 now for nine months, it has gone over on a tripod, I've shot more than three thousand images and I've had zero problems with the camera except to clean the sensor once. I've sold three to customers at the store where I work and none of them have experienced problems. Maybe I got the Arnold Schwarzenegger of M8's but I'm astounded at some of the problems I'm hearing about this camera. I certainly sympathize with any one who is experiencing problems and we have a policy of no questions return or exchange on the camera as Leica has agreed to take any of them back.

deep breaths... deep breaths.
the m8 produces smoking images in my opinion. i have been very, very pleased with what i have seen. i have also found setting custum white balance a breeze and non-issue.
the REAL problem is for some, including myself, the m8 needs to work. it needs to produce images that in turn can make $$$. i need to rely on that body as i can't afford two m8's... (i do have film and digital back-ups so all is not lost.) is this a realistic expectation? i am concerned.
i also DO NOT want to spend that kind of $ on a camera and then have to spend more on shipping it across the globe so they can get it right!?!? damn it makes me angry!
i waited and waited and waited on the r-d1s due to the internet "reports". finally i caved and it has been FLAWLESS for quite some time. i thought i had learned something there.

i'd be pissed if i spent all my dough on something that didn't work right. just take a break and have it repaired. the warranty will cover the vertical line problem, you just pay for the shipping.

John:
Welcome to the M8 love/hate club.
My first M8 was a nightmare and I was told the issues I had, although many, were relatively minor. It was ultimately replaced - the replacement's RF was out of alignment out of the box, but rather than having that one replaced too, I sent it in under warranty for adjustment. After four or five weeks (it had to go to Germany) I received a perfectly working camera. I have rarely used my film cameras since.
You must accept the fact your lenses need to be coded and you must accept the fact you'll need IR-CUT filters in front of your lenses - accept this and life will be easier or you.
Once you calm down, send it in under warranty or have it replaced and start over.
Once it's right you be singing its praises just like the rest of us.
Regards, Bill

Infocus,
It's good to hear that Leica is stepping up to the issues they are having...
I'm thinking someone like you should start a thread about your trouble free M8 and get others to also share their good fortune...most of the M8 topics in here are of the negative sort...

Dear John:
For whatever it is worth, this is very good advice from "NB23".
If I had an interest in an M8, this is exactly what I would do in your situation.
Definitely consider it.
..but buy from someone else.
Electronics are electronics. It can be a game like customer service on the telephone, getting the right one, you know?

"If you were a pro you would have to own two M8s"
as mentioned i have multiple back up options. and i do make money with a camera however i'm not sure what that makes me... i shutter (hah) at the word "pro".
i KNOW the dealer or leica or somebody will sort it out... i just do NOT want to be paying to ship it and do NOT want to be down the m8 again in the future (should further issues arrise).

There is no passport warranty on the M8 in North America but the dealer should be able to get Leica to agree for free shipping for you.
Two weeks is borderline for most dealers to get an RA from Leica to be able to swap out the camera from their own stock (if they have stock) but it can be done.
Demanding instant refunds or replacements just because the camera is expensive is ridiculous. Approach your dealer in a friendly manner and they should be happy to sort it out for you. Blundering in with demands and ultimatums will just get everyone's backs up.
Good luck but I'm sure everything will work out fine!

But you don't deal with Leica, you deal with the dealer. They just can't hand over a brand new camera. They have to get a Return Authorization from Leica. This is the procedure with just about every photo product.Pitxu said:I just can not agree with this !!!
It's Leica who should be offering a money back guarranty !!!
In some cases the dealer will have gone through this procedure enough, or have a close enough relationship with Leica, to be confident of getting the RA so they can basically give the customer a new camera right away. However this is the exception, not the rule, so if it's been a few weeks the customer MAY not get a new camera straight away. In a warranty situation the service department has to see the product to verify that it is in fact a warranty problem. If it is, they will fix it or replace it.
This is the way the world works even if not everyone is happy with it.

Exactly. If yours is defective, and you just bought it ask for another camera or get a refund an buy elsewhere.

If he's owned and used the camera for two weeks he's not going to get a full refund. It's now a used camera but can be repaired or replaced by Leica at no cost. If he bought it from a good dealer they will sort out the problem for him at no additional cost.Joe Mondello said:Exactly. Do you really think if you drove a Rolls around for two weeks, putting miles on it, then returned to the dealer and complained of a funny sound, they would give you a new one on the spot?Pitxu said:I'd expect to get the runaround if I'd bought a dodgy ford, but better treatment from rolls royce.
No, they would have the service department check it out, locate the problem and fix it. Sure you would get a loaner in the meantime but not much else.
You have to be realistic with your expectations and I find today's attitude of "I should get a refund for anything any time" quite ridiculous.
As I've already said, if John approaches his dealer with a friendly, undemanding attitude they will sort out for him at no additional expense. I know he will because he's Canadian after all!
