Considering the spat of threads with bad blood and such this week, what if in the name of civility we made it so that your avatar had to be a picture of the poster? People have said that the anonimity on forums leads to some people being more boorish. If you had your mug next to what you wrote, would that change your tone?

An idea, maybe not a good one.

Avatar ain't going to change that. But probably little common-sense "guide" will:

1. If you think you know more than most people, try not to show it.
2. If you *really* know more than most people, you *won't* show it anyways

And I only wish I had had a Barnack Leica when I was the age of your avatar subject.

Or indeed our real names. I've had people explain to me why they don't, but I remain at best half-convinced. It's one of those things that must require different mind-sets; some can't see why anyone would use their real name, and others can't see why people don't.

Certainly I feel more comfortable with real names, and I find it very strange that people put someone else's face beside their name. I also find it odd when people use pictures of themselves as children: it may have been amusing once, a few decades ago, when it was an original idea, but why do it now? Still lifes, animals, logos, I can begin to understand. But what the hell.

Not only that: the radiator is in the wrong place and someone appears to have stolen the bit that goes down the middle of the windscreen. I think your Series III has been in an accident and been bodged up...

Ha, that's not a Leica, its a Zorki 6! The only camera that I trust my 2 year to hold!

Yes I'm sorry that it is a modern Land Rover Roger, but at least it does get used for what it was designed for! Salisbury Plain and the Byways of Wiltshire are good LR country.

That's what it's about...

I don't have much time for trying to get stuck on Land Rover 'playgrounds': I'd much rather try NOT to get stuck on interesting unsurfaced roads. Have you tried the Pyrenees?

It's a bit like cameras. You take pictures with cameras; you go exploring with Land Rovers. Not much point in having either, otherwise.

Maybe I should use a smilar pic for my avatar. Do you read Land Rover World? I've had a column there for the last few months.

No, I didn't mean the Army. I meant the ones you see advertised in the LR comics. The ones that describe themselves as playgrounds.

I agree it's unsafe, and it's a very bad idea if you are employed. If you are employed and post from the company network, then it is double-dog-dare-ya bad idea.

Do I post on internet forums from work. . . during work hours? Yes.

Can the boss use this against me? Yes. (according to the US Courts.)

Can a potential employer use a search engine to see how much time I might waste at work? Yes. (Come to think of it if I were an employer I'd be curious too...)

Remember folks that your postings follow you around for the rest of your life.
