That's really me
I've had this scanner for a few weeks now and really like it. I didnt experience the banding issue that has come up alot.
I do however use a windows vista machine to run silverfast, not sure if that is a factor in the issue or not. I also have been scanning 35mm and a few 120, dont have any 4x5 to scan.
I was nervous as first when buying the scanner, which is why I bought it from a place that had a 30 day return period in case the purchase turned into a banding, memory leaking, lousy scanning, pox upon my house fiasco.
Turns out I was lucky enough not to run into those issues and Im glad I have it, and I learned a thing or two from that review about manipulating silverfast.

I'm glad it helped you.
One more time, for the record: Silverfast has corrected the software problems with two updates. Anyone buying the M1 gets those updates free.

I don't get it
I don't get it
2 years of frantic fingers bashing keyboards over the anticipated Microtek M1 scanner. The thing finally arrives. One person writes a review of the product. Nobody even bothers to look.
What's up with that?

I suppose. I'm not convinced that either the Epdon V750 or the Microtek M1 are the answer. If things go right I will be using an alternative to a scanner for making photographs.
On the other hand, with no practice and no training and horrible negatives to work with, an Epson 4990 is doing just fine for my needs at the moment.

I like the 4990 very much, too. I've heard it's not that different from the Epson 700 series.

I looked. I'm primarily a large-format shooter, but I do shoot a lot of 35mm too, and some medium format, so I have been very curious about this scanner for a long time. I was originally looking at the 1800f. Then when it was discontinued and quickly unavailable, I waited for the replacement, M1. Meanwhile, I read some favorable reviews of the i900, and then someone gave me one (i900) in trade for processing a bunch of negatives. Otherwise I'd be looking at buying an M1. Even so, I might upgrade to the M1- and this review was helpful. So thanks for posting this.venchka said:2 years of frantic fingers bashing keyboards over the anticipated Microtek M1 scanner. Waiting on Maitani
Wayne: Not sure why I missed this thread earlier... oh yeah, I don't check RFF every day.
Anyway, it looks like the wait for this scanner was worth it. My PayPal has gotten low enough that I can't afford it right now, but when I sell some stuff, it will be on my list. This or an Epson are the only way I'll be able to work with my 4x5 originals in the digital domain. And I think this is a better choice than the Epson.

As Ted Harris said: For someone starting from scratch, the M1 is slightly better than the Epsons but not enough better to justify replacing a V700 or V750. All 3 will handle 8x10. Wicked evil grin.
There may be a more traditional solution for 135-120-4x5 on the horizon for me.

I recommend an enlarger.

I use a 4990 for scanning B+W negatives in all formats.
I have a hard time believing anyone is going to improve
on its performance at a consumer price point.

I agree. An enlarger is on my wish list.

hi Venchka,
thanks for the article, are you still using the m1/f1 and would you recommend it over the Epson 700/750 ?
I am a V600 user and am looking at options.
thanks
