Hi guys,
i received the 35mm pre asph summilux i bought on ebay
this lens is awesome, small, a WONDERFUL fingerprint ( as NB23 said ), and a so beautiful bokeh
i think i will sell my 35mm Summilux ASPH or my summicron pre asph 4th now

Hi,
i used tri-x rated @ 250 asa , souped in D76 1:1 for 9 minutes
the rendering of the summilux pre asph is quite different from my summicron pre asph iv
here's a shot with the summicron iv which is on the same roll

samsam, congratulations on your *new* lens.
i have difficulty making lens judgments from web-rez pictures, but your shots look very nice. What aperture were you shooting the lux versus the cron - do you recall?

to answer your question MCTuomey , i used 1.4 aperture for 1, 2, and 4th shot ( i think you can see the "glow" on the last shot with the woman's hands )
When i shoot with the summicron, i genereally use aperture 4 or 5.6, but i can use aperture 2 in the subway too

The pre-asph has been much maligned over the years. The first version had problems with flare and performed rather poorly at f1,4. Once the second generation came out, it become an very good lens.
It has it's own signature, a bit of the "glow" shot wide open, but sharp enough. It has more filed curvature that the much larger and much more expensive 1,4 Asph. The focus plane "curves " slightly. If you aim it at something 8 feet away and focus on that object, you will find that in the edges the focus plane is closer to 6-7 feet. A curved focus plane. So, it might not be the greatest lens for architecture, shot wide open, but for "street" shooting it is perfect.
It is a vintage design, dating back to the 60's, but it survived the subsequent decades quite well.
I had the same dilemma, I had the 35f2 IV (as well as the 35/2 Asph and earlier incarnations of Summicron's) and I got the 35f1.4 Asph. Impressive lens when it came to resolution and sharpness, but way too flare sensitive. One of the few lenses that could flare badly enough to opaque out the whole negative! In the end I never trusted the lens for any critical shooting and got rid of it.
The pre-asph 35/1,4 and the 35/2 IV is a better package, in my opinion. They are smaller and both have a rather distinct signature to them.

I'll repeat myself but I don't care :angel: : I think the 35 pre-asph summilux, summarit 5cm f1.5 and noctilux have that unique Leica look.

I've had a pre asph Summilux for a week or so now and it is as sweet as a nut! What a lovely gentle signature it has. That doesn't mean it can't come up with the goods, it can, but it does so with restrained style IMHO.
I tried it very briefly on my RD1S and hated it straight away. This one is for B+W film I think. Perhaps I will revisit that decision later, but for now I keep the Hexanon UC on the RD1S, and the Summilux on a film body.
