Leica announces new steel-rim Summilux 35mm f1.4 lens

If I click on the image once, it presents the image in a smaller size surrounded by black borders. If I click that image, it enlarges the image ever so slightly. If I click on that image, it magnifies the image greatly.

Strange! (but it works, sort of). My Firefox is much older 72.0.1 but it works flawlessly.

Also, it works perfectly on my iPhone’s browsers too.

erik , can you try post # 74 instead and see if it works.

Forgive me for asking this but I haven't read the whole thread. What is the advantage of a shiny steel rim at the front of the lens?
The steel rim and funky shade design were unique to this lens alone. I'm not sure there was any particular advantage. Since no other Leica lens was designed like it, apparently Leica designers didn't think so either.

Many Voigtländer lenses have someting similar, but the Summilux steel rim doesn't have such agressive metal teeth on its front. The rim allows the user to mount or to remove the shade very fast. The shade had to be mount with its straight sides exactly horizontal.

Erik.

Several of the Zeiss M-mount lenses carried this design feature forward too. They have a bayonet mount designed into the rim which mates with a lens shade. Perhaps the shiny metal rim scratches less that a black rim would. Perhaps it is cosmetic.

I look forward to seeing photos from the new version steel-rim 35.

Emphasis should be on the images created and not which trim or obscure lens characteristics are seen in a lens. Erik takes great looking images. Whether it is the steel rim or non-steel rim lenses were used is really irrelevant. Use what you have. Enjoy your photography.
Now back to the new 35/1.4; do I need one? No. Will I get one? Dunno.

The new lens will be awesome. I have a second version Summilux 35/1.4, which may be sufficient for a 35mm/1.4. I also have a Canon 35mm/1.5 ltm. Then I have a first version Summicron 35/2. Oh well. I don't need to get another 35mm lens.

While there are already sample images of the new steel-rim shared in other Forums by lens-reviewers, I reckon it would be more meaningful/interesting to see casual images taken by our forum members here. While I do believe that the characteristics of this new lens to be similar to the original one, due to the different glass types used however, it won't be identical to the v1. (In fact, from those sample pictures I have seen elsewhere, the new steel rim summilux seems to have more contrast than the original one. May or may not be a good thing.)

So, anyone?

Yossi, I've found out that the bad connection between Amsterdam and RFf is caused by something called CLOUDFARE. I really don't know what to do about it.

About the characteristics of the new steel rim: I don't think the new lens will produce images exactly like the old steel rims. The three old series of steel rims, with nrs. 172XXXX; 1776XXX and 206XXXX, are already very different from each other.

Most photographs in reviews rarely seem interesting or underline the characteristics of the lens. An interesting lens for sure.

Hello Erik,

Great! The image that you attached is clear and crisp now. Congrats!

I agree with your view that the new steel rim is unlikely to produce identical image as the original version (hence I am intrigued to see sample images from the new lens.)
