Leica announces new steel-rim Summilux 35mm f1.4 lens

Personally, I've got a 35 Summaron ƒ/2.8 for 'character' shots and the ZM 2,8/35 for everything else. A faster 35 would be nice but this lens seems just too, too soft wide open to consider that sort of expense.

What do you mean with "soft"? Low contrast or not sharp enough?

The Summarons 35mm f3.5 and f2.8 are sharp at any aperture, so is the Elmar 35mm f3.5.

Some big cheese stubborn at LCAG hurts after realization what they have lost retro momentum (bonuses) to MIC lenses. We could get oldy style 28 5.6 and 35/2 for x times 10 less.
And Nokton 35 1.4 II is just as good as any Lux pre-asph, including Leica glow 🙂 After getting it, I look at junk condition Lux pre-asph for 2K$ and laugh.

Has any lucky one here already got hold of a new steel-rim 35mm Summilux? If so, would you share some sample images here to let us see its rendering PLEASE. TIA.

(There are already some sample pix from "review". None looks anything like what posted here. Hope to see some new steel rim pictures from real users here.)

I did not even see a picture of the new lens.

This is with an original steel rim, no. 2060691, 1964.

Hi Erik,

I had seen the pictures of the new lens of course. Just haven't seen any pictures taken WITH the new steel rim Summilux over here yet🙂

Btw, with due respect, your original steel rim pictures are great. Just that the low scanning quality (and/or the web compression) don't do justice to them, making them look flat and unsharp.

Hi yossi, I know that, the scans themselves are not too bad, but the representation here on RFf is horrible. The old RFf was much and much better. But when you look directly on Flickr, things are a bit better, I hope: https://www.flickr.com/photos/erik_v...posted-public/

I think the reason for the bad representation is the fact that I am in The Netherlands and not in the US.

Thank you for your comments.

Erik.

<< I think the reason for the bad representation is the fact that I am in The Netherlands and not in the US.>> Come on, that CAN'T be true 🙂

Let me try ...

Any better in image quality?
(At least when you click on the picture, you get to see a larger/clearer image.)

Thank you, Yossi, the picture is sharper now, but when I click on it, it becomes smaller, not larger, on a dark red background.

Please help me!

Erik.

Hi Erik, which browser are you using?

I tried with Chrome and Safari on my Mac, and both work fine. ie. cursor hovers on image here should show a (+) sign, just click on the image, you should see something as shown below. Click on the image again, it should bring you to your original Flickr image. Please try again.

Yossi, I tried, but no difference. I see a smaller image on a dark red ground.

I will try also my Windows 10 computer. This is a Windows 8 (running out, I know). My browser is Firefox.

When I click on the smaller image on a dark red ground I go to my database with photographs, not to Flickr.

This comment got me wondering about this enough to load up Firefox and log in to RFF on here in case there was an issue with how FF or its rendering engine handled these things. Nope, same behaviour as in Vivaldi, the browser I normally use (it's a Chromium-based browser... basically Chrome without all of Google's bullsh*t); clicking the image in the post brings up the "shadowbox", with the image in the centre of a red background (using RFF's dark theme - may be different colour background in other themes), and clicking it again takes you to the "raw file", hosted on Flickr's servers (with the address in the browser's address bar: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48015756996_793ab13b5b_k.jpg). What do you mean by "my database with photographs", Erik? Are you not landing on the Flickr address I just mentioned?

Admittedly, like Yossi, I'm also using a Mac, but the OS shouldn't make a difference to how the same browser handles a web page. Cross-platform programs are pretty well standardised.

Are you using a current/updated version of Firefox (latest is 106.0.5, according to Wikipedia)?

No, I return to my own computer from wich I've send my pictures to Flickr. Help me please!!!

How can I find out wich version of Firefox I use?

Erik.

Eh? How on earth are you getting back to your computer by clicking on something in the browser? That makes absolutely no sense.

Honestly, I've not used Windows since I last used XP in 2008, so I'm not sure. I don't think I've even seen the Windows 8 UI in person. Based on what I'm seeing on Google images, I'm guessing you click on where it says "Firefox" in the top left and find an "about" menu item. That should pop up a window that looks a bit like this: https://www.extremetech.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/firefox-28.jpg

In the upper right corner of the browser is an icon with three horizontal lines. Click on that. Scroll down and click on Help. Scroll down and click on About Firefox. A screen will pop up showing the version number. Mine is 106.0.5 and shows as current.

ptpdprinter Can you click on the image that I attached in post [NODE="68"]#[/NODE]68 and see if you could view a larger version of the image please. (using your 106.0.5 Firefox browser ofc)

If I click on the image once, it presents the image in a smaller size surrounded by black borders. If I click that image, it enlarges the image ever so slightly. If I click on that image, it magnifies the image greatly.
