Can the Summitar take filters?

There are filter threads down close to the lens element. The Summitar takes special Summitar-only filters. If you are lucky, you can find an adaptor that screws onto the lens filter threads on one side, and takes normal filters on the other.
 
FrankS has it right. Special 41mm diameter filters with a tapered 36mm mount were made for the Summitar. A SOOEY adapter lets you use E39 *filters.

If you can't find the proper adaptor, try to find one Summitar filter, any kind even with damaged glass, so you can make your own adaptor by removing the glass and epoxying a filter step up ring to the empty Summitar filter ring.

This would be perfect if I could also find orange glass. One filter ring, multiple filters. I like that.
 
That could be a Series filter adaptor. It could work too, but it connects to the lens by grabbing onto the outer rim of the lens.
 
I also have a Canon 35/2 and I am debating the best way to use the same filters for both the Canon 35/2 and the Summitar.

I am having trouble finding a step up ring in the 40mm size. I've found 39mm-58mm, which is fine since I also have a FL 55/1.2 which is 58mm thread size.

But I am thinking, maybe it's best to keep the 58mm thread size by itself and just try to pair up the 39mm/40mm thread sizes.

I've found step-up's to 43mm for both 39mm and 40mm... but the problem then would be finding (b&w) filters at that thread size.

Any other solution? I've heard about Series VI but i don't quite knoq hoq it works. Seems like it's just a step up, no? And that the lowesr thread size is 52mm?

Aah, as far as it's listed it states that it's a Summitar filter made my BDB uf Luton England with coated UV + red filter.

If it's a Series filter it would not fit the Summitar?
 
I'd use a step up filter adaptor from something smaller diameter that will sort of mates with the empty Summitar filter ring (with epoxy), to 49mm diameter. 49mm filters are easy to find.
 
If the ad says Summitar filter, it may well be a proper screw-in Summitar thread on one side and a Series filter holder on the other. That would work well.
 
The filters for a Summitar are not all that rare and you will find them on eBay quite regularly. Something that is a bit more rare but can also be found is an adapter that allows you to use standard 39mm filters of the sort that will fit on Summicron etc lenses. Either are worth having. The Summitar filters are kind of funnel shaped (the only way I can describe them) with the screw ring on the skinny end of the funnel. They just screw into the lens as you would with any other filter. I have not seen any clamp on type filters for these lenses although clamp filters are an alternative for some lenses like the Summarit. As for lens hoods, if you are interested, you will find that the normal clamp on type for the Summicron work fine for the Summitar as the latter has the same milled ring around the outer edge of the lens to accept the little fingers that clamp onto the outside of the lens.
 
I recently won a yellow filter on flea-bay, for very little cost. They do turn up and can be got for very little outlay. If you got one with scratched/broken glass you could get the glass from a modern multi-coated filter cut down and fit that 🙂 Better still, if you know someone with engineering skill , have a batch of adaptors made and sell the excess.
 
I've no personal connection with Sandy at Ritz Collectibles, except that I've been happy with the service and goods bought from him. I may have bought his last SNHOO adapter (summitar thread to E39 filters)! 😀 But FYI he does have a number of different used "summitar filters" listed on his online catalog:

Don't mean to hijack this thread, but does anyone know what these unique tapered Summitar filters are officially called/numbered? I think G. Sartorius incorrectly describes it in his book as an "A36 filter". Thanks!

I just purchased a Series VI Tiffen filter holder off e-bay for $.99 and it works just fine. An easier alternative for a user unless you want to be a Leica purist. I originally was looking for a lens shade but didn't like the barndoor original Leica shade so the Series VI adaptor gives me other options.

Thanks! I understand that now. but why epoxy the step-up ? Will it not hold without it? And where to find epoxy?

Okay, but how to know which Series filter holder it is? I assume it's written around the outter edge?

More specifically how will you know what filter thread the outter thread of the holder is made for?

Could someone explain how the Series filters work. Are the basically step-up's with a different name?

For example: On B&H's website in the Bayonet and Series section it lists:

"48mm-Series 7 Step-Up Adapter Ring (Lens to Filter)" I understand the male thread is 48mm... but how are you supposed to know that particular size the female thread is, if "Series VII" itself contains a range? Does that mean that all sizes considered part of Series VII can fit on the filter end of the adapter ring??

I've seen Series V and VI filter holders, the larger the number, the larger the diameter of the glass to match the size of the lens it is to go on. VI would be the right size for most 35mm RF lenses including the Summitar.
 
The Series x holders I have seen are actually two halves that screw together and hold between them an unthreaded glass filter. I have a couple of different Series VI holders for 40.5mm etc., but on any of them you can unscrew the two halves, insert a filter, and screw them back together. So for example, the 48mm->Series VI adapter mentioned above just means that the back business end of the holder is threaded for 48mm. The comment about "up to xx mm" reflects the fact that there is some latitude in what size filters the holder will hold, although it appears that most Series VI filters (the filters themselves) have a 41.4mm OD.
