Sean Reid posted the first part of his review of the Nokton 35/1.4. Looks like the new CV is quite a mediocre performer with considerable focus shift. Unlike the Ultron 35 and Nokton f1.2.

After reading Sean's review, I am feeling pretty good about staying with my CV 35/1.7.

I don't know what he is speaking about. Because he writes in a different language. But maybe I'm just getting old.
For sure he believes he is cool......... I don't.

retow,
You are not getting old because I am not old either. I don't think I have seen such infantile writing in my life, irrespective of age or educational background. In fact such a comment is rather unfair to children, who have even an ounce of, well, anything about them. There is more than a dose of ego behind it, I would say. Having had my second experience of his writing (I saw some before but forgot the name (funnily enough) and clicked on a link once again). for sure it will be my last.
As for speaking the truth. Plenty of others do so in a far less immature and abrasive fashion. Behind his words is also the suggestion that his persepctive is the only one and anyone approaching things from a different angle is a turgid idiot. For anyone who might suggest I am another stiff assed oldie Leicaphile, I am 30 and my Leica kit is with me in Afghanistan and NOT in a cabinet....

Let me check my email IN BOX.....ah finally no more e-mails from uber/cweeks, seems like my attempts to block this guy have finally worked. The things you'll do to win a camera.

How old is this Chris Weeks fellow? I have never heard of him before this thread. It seems MF doesn't mean "medium format" to him but after the 6th time the word was used I just closed the window. I can certainly name at least 10 people on RFF that Stephen could loan lenses to for more professional reviews.

Seconded. I'm 18 and I too find Weeks' style infantile and unreadable. Some of his photography is quite good but the manner in which he expresses himself is so off-putting that I would never follow his blog.

I used to write like that, and then I got married, civilized me right up!

Chris Weeks was loaned the 35 1.4 by Mr. Gandy and did an actual in field test comparing it with a 35 'lux in all sorts of lighting conditions. He also makes fun of exactly what everyone is doing right now.![]()
Chris certainly has a writing style about him.
What some may not be aware of is that Chris is an extremely successful Hollywood celebrity photographer with a library of over 2 MILLION images. He is also one of the very few staff AP photogs. In short, Chris is an excellent photog who knows the biz -- regardless of how you take his writing style.

Yeah, you do have to give props, however location and opportunity have a roll to play in great pictures, many here (not me BTW) could shoot as well in similar situations. And skill/fame are no replacement for manners and proper disposition (god I never thought I'd ever say that
) The exception to that is humor and informal spaces, I would talk like that to a friend at a bar, but not where a future client might read it. IMO

does he 'talk' in that same style?

Maybe. But I don't buy that. I've hired plenty of photographers in my day-job, and the number of ones you could count on to come back with the right photo is small. Personally, I respect people who make a living out of photography - I don't look down my nose at them. If you're flavour of the month right now, you might not be in five years. Good on 'em, I say, even if they use rude words in their blogs.

It looks to me like he lives and works in the rarefied air of the rich famous and beautiful.
I'm happy for his sucess...but it looks to us "normal" folks that the lack of oxygen is becoming a problem.

Well, I'd take my new Nokton out, but The Golden Girls are on right now, and I'm on huge m#$%^f$%^ing Estelle Getty kick, so, it's priorities.

Sure, sure, but I bet you could find one that you would let around your children, or grandmother. I also respect working photographers, there are so many photographers, but so few "good" ones. If you can make an honest living taking pictures, thats amazing, but then I think finding work as a History professor will be amazing

I think you guys are being a little hard on him and fairly uptight. Yeah, his writing style may not be what you'd read in a magazine (nor is his site meant to necessarily appeal to a broad audience), and there aren't test photos or pictures of charts, but man, with his experience, he's the guy I'd want reviewing lenses. Looking at his photos and coming to my own conclusion is a lot easier and more reality-based than super technical specs or some of the shots seen on a site like dpreview (don't get me wrong, I love his reviews too). If you don't like his writing, then don't read his sote. The best part is, you don't even need to, just look at the shots (which are amazing).

And despite what people might think, I rather like his photos, they are creative in the composition, shows he has ideas, and frankly look what he is doing and where he is going. Way beyond most of us here! Got to give him a little respect for that even if he is mouthy.

chris weeks does not speak a different language, nor is it infantile. he writes in a passionate, colloquial style which is immediately accessible, engaging, and most of all entertaining. the colloquial style of writing was used in milton's 'paradise lost', joyce's 'ulysses', and a great deal of the works of shakespeare, who also swore. the english language is an ever changing, constantly evolving beast, and there is no right or wrong way to use it.
