DAG CLA has "no value?"

The Kowa Six is apparently pretty routine to work on. I know a guy that CLA's them all the time. Parts if needed (and often they are not) can come from other Kowa's.

I've found that DAG is the guy to go to when you've got a tough problem -- old stuff and rare stuff. He's amazing -- as I've said before a national treasure - I don't care how long he takes to get it right.

I agree with you, David.

Don Goldberg (DAG) is an amazing man.
He is also a very nice person, and this to me is very important when I deal with camera repair people.

When Don tells me that there are no spare parts for a lens, then I know that I have a new paper weight. Don't even bother to look for the spare part yourself.

So, why does Certo6 sells his questionably CLAd folders for a LOT more? Apparently CLA means a lot to some people. Strangely that it works better - becomes a better value on a $100 filder than a $1000 Leica.

I recently sold an over 1 million serial no. SS M3 that I had sherry CLA last August and had an extra spool and lizard skin installed and people were bitching an moaning that they wanted it for the same price as the leica M price guide website ($750). (even after the top paragraph of the site says to add at least $150 to the price if it has been CLA'd. I wound up selling it for what I paid for everything to a knowledgeable buyer who i'm sure will really appreciate it.

I don't want to rip people off like photo arsenal or gokevincameras but it least be able to sell used gear, especially a very nice Leica for at least what I paid for it.

People need to just be more reasonable I think.

I don't think I will sell any photographic equipment on the evil bay anymore. I'm sticking to rff now. I feel better that anything I sell here will most likely go to someone who appreciates fine art photography and better understands prices. Plus it's cheaper to list things that are very expensive like liecas, e-bay hits you with incredible insertion fees if you have high reserves and high buy it now prices.

If I read you with the BS filter on OFF mode, I understand you're selling on RFF because you can charge more and make more profit in the end as opposed to selling it on eBay and and let it go for its real market value.

And I'm not sure I'd care if someone would buy a lens from me just to smash it on concrete and see it explode. And the more I'd get for the lens in question, the more I'd be happy to see it explode.

Im buying it because of the camera itself. for me CLA is not that much to value, I would rather do CLA by my self.

the value of the camera is not based on how may CLA or how they were cared. its the camera itself.

i won't go that far but often some of the asking prices here are a bit nuts. several times used CV lenses have asking prices higher than new ones at cameraquest. that said, i would prefer to deal here. i have sold a few things and bought a few things here and all have been good experiences.

I think it's the "house with a pool" syndrome. Lots of people looking for a house will see little point in "paying for a pool" even if they will eventually use it. That's the market and it's not likely much different for a CLA on a camera. Perhaps unfair and harsh but "that's how she goes" as Ricky's dad Ray would say.

I value a camera that has been CLA'd by a reputable repairman. I bought my M6 here, and the camera had been serviced by CRR Luton in the UK. What I got is a complete concern-free mind using the camera, knowing that a good service was made to the camera and that it'd work as it should, what it does. A mechanical camera (or mechanical machine in general) that hasn't been cleaned, lubricated and adjusted in 15-20 years is not going to work as good as it should, no matter how well you took care for it.

I'd rather buy a 50 year old camera that had been serviced by a reputable repairman than a 50 year old camera that has vever been opened. And I'll pay mare for a CLA'd one.

If Jimmy Dludlu comes here selling a camera "with a fresh CLA" from any famous or non-famous repair person AND i want such a camera, i will not pay for that CLA.
If kevin or backalley or brian sweeney or raid or another good old active member comes with the same camera that had a CLA, AND i want such a camera, i will be happy to pay for it.
I don't trust everybody.

And some people refer to their e-bay name as some kind of guarantee of how reliable sellers they are. It's funny.

Sometimes i take a risk, and buy from somebody here that i've never seen posting anything on rff. But i would not pay for a CLA he/she says was recently done. Last time i did it, was with a 21/4 skopar from Singapore, and it all went fine. Before that, i got another lens, from a more known member, and it turned out to be in need for a 98 euro focus adjustment - I was fine with that, since now i have a well working clean sample. But i could not sell it for the buying price + cla.
Do i care? No, because i am a happy user.

As i said before - if you make a mistake thinking you will love the camera and you invest in it, it is a mistake that you will have to pay fore by selling it lower than your investment.

Why is that?. I mean, if the seller provides the papers of the service, it should be ok. I understand that I'll trust more a long time RFF member that a person that has 0 posts here and tries to sell a camera, but buying from such a member is asking for trouble.

I'll have no trouble buying from a member that has 100-500 posts and provides the papers that proves that everything he says is correct.

Someone who is not trained in adjusting times for mechanical equipment will find it difficult to determine the difference between one second and three quarters of a second or eight tenths of a second or even one half of a second.

Similarly, that same person may not know what to look for or listen for when dealing with the film transport mechanism, the shutter mechanism, the rangefinder, etc.

So, when such a person says a camera is "working properly" it does not mean the same thing as "the camera has been cleaned, lubed and adjusted".

That's just understanding how to read an ad.

I, personally, have never been "scammed" as you infer but I guess that's because you were not clear on (or never bothered to read) my previous post.

Your previous post was a mere link to a super long thread which I didn't bother to read on your command. You mad? Go pick on someone else.

Like I said, a camera in normal working condition is worth something. The fact that it was CLA'd for the original owner doesn't mean I will pay for it. I am buying a camera, not a CLA.
