It's not hard to find the error: it's the size of an elephant.

Every racial generalisation/stereotype I've heard like this invariably precedes some racist comment. And that old "They don't WANT to be one of us" line quite often precedes something worse. You might not mean to group yourself with anti-Semites, but you're quoting their stock phrases.

Because it has been drawn to a direction I frankly dislike. If Ms Zimbel didn't like what we're my first impressions, that's her problem.

There's Fred apologizing for his roots and that other guy respecting him tremendously for coming to terms. How Cheezier can we go?

I have no plans into participating in a political discussion with people that have Highly poluted brains caused by western media, people who Watch CNN with pop-Corn and rooting for Team USA.

I couldn't agree more! It was Ned's original post and he deleted it in what I see as a positive response to what is obviously devolving into some negative areas.

Pffff! Even funnier. Philipp, I didn't expect you to fall this deep. I'm not understanding your point. You're sarcasm is not effective on this one. Only the Jews separate themselves not by their physical roots but by their religion. Nothing new, he?

I won't call you anything. I am not that type. Slavic people don't have thin skin and you probably know that very well. We're not sissies. So many historical events too many of you know nothing about but yet all you know is to point someone and find faults to talk about.

It's become too crazy around here. Too many morons looking for a fight, too many incult people trying to sound refined. Too many girlies Ballet Dancing and talking about politics they watch on TV instead of talking about photography.

Well I admit that I was being somewhat polemical. It's just that people don't usually have just one identity. What they will answer to that question depends very much on the context where it is asked. To exaggerate a little bit: Ask a Serb Jew in Serbia, and he'll be a Jew; ask him in Israel, and he'll be a Serb; ask him in America, and it will depend on who he's hanging out with. Ask a German Turk in Turkey, and he'll be a German. I've met countless of people with these hybrid identities, and I believe this sort of thing is now more common than a clearly defined identity.

I'm not sure. Firstly I have met a lot of Jews in the former Soviet Union who had Jew in their passport under "nationality" and who considered themselves Jews (and Soviet/Russian/Uzbek/Ukrainian citizens), but who weren't particularly religious. When I'm in a Muslim country, I identify myself as a Christian, because that's the category that everybody is thinking in, even though I'm not much of a practising Christian.

I think the religious argument doesn't hold water anymore. Jewish communities in Germany complained that many of the former Soviet Jews that came to Germany after 1991 weren't particularly religious and didn't identify with their religion all that much. In pracice, Jews are probably just as secular today as everybody else in their surroundings nowadays.

Oh but I've had countless of discussions with Slavs about nationalism and Slavic identity and how they felt about it. (I speak two Slavonic languages and read another two or three.) I don't think my in-laws are any less Slavic if they mention that they don't like how Slavs have a bad name in Western Europe (or that's at least how they perceive it.) Ithink in any nation you can always find someone who feels strongly for his own national or ethnic identity and who will speak out if someone speaks badly about this identity.

I think this particular strand of discussion is rather fruitless. I could argue that much more Russians died than anyone else, or that a lot of Germans died, too. But all this is going to accomplish is a macabre sort of pissing contest who has more deaths, and I don't really see what is to be gained from that.

Cable Street is hte heart of London's East End, where the dockers and students, Jewish and non-Jewish, gave the fascists a good kicking. Thereafter, they were finished in Britain.

A reminder: you raied this issue. I find it bizarre that anyone in a supposedly modern world is obsessed by whether people are Jewish or not, as you seem to be. This isn't political correctness: it's humanism.

There was an intriguing thread on Robert Frank recently. The cop, a thug, was obsessed with whether Frank was a Commie, or European, or a NEw Yorker, or a Jew, or a Ballet-Dancer, all interchangeable: not like us. If you want to be a photographer, perhaps you had better learn to understand people, not label them.

Just before I leave this thread for good, I have to tell you and your thin skinned friends around here that in my original post I reffered to "Montreal Jews" as something very positive.

Leonard Cohen, Mordecai Richler, two renowned montrealers. Schwartz, an institution. Montreal Bagels... So many institutions, so many artistic legends. All from where I live. Too many to count them. All here, right in my quart.

My original post was a tribute, an imagery. It was in good spirit. All until this mess.

It's not only Jewish, ballet-dancing gay minorities who would think this kind of remark pathetic. Most people I know would, apart from the odd cop in '50s Arkansas. It is nonsense on so many levels.

I also recognise that phrase almost word-for-word from Victor Klemperer's diaries - you should read them, he made a study of this kind of vocabulary.

You're not threatening, I just wonder how long you'd last in any creative profession, to which I presume you aspire, spouting this nonsense then puffing your chest out like a scared bar-room bully when you're called on it.

People get labelled all the time, rightly or wrongly and personally I try and steer clear of any words written or in conversation that relate to race, religion, color or otherwise as there is always someone who wants to argue or take offense when it really wasn't intended. Some people can't help it.
I just watched the news this morning, Burma cyclone, China earthquake etc. These are events I believe more worthy of energy and interest than some misplaced comment and misinterperatation. Instead of being happy that a lot of us are interested in his photo's I suspect a few off us are now thinking otherwise. I know I am.
And before anyone says anything or calls me names or attempts to make me feel bad about the above rant, be happy your alive, get out on your bike, motorcycle etc, take your rangefinder and get some perspective
