I think we're all missing something here: The box is evidently designed to be used as an urn to store the ashes of the soon-to-be-deceased purchaser.
Kaufmann is a man who obviously knows the demographics of his market, and this urn/lens box will be put to quick use by most of the customers of this lens.

At the risk of upsetting a few loyalist ......
This is a joke. The future of this company is very questionable and with the price points where they are Leica may verywell drive themselves out of business. Dealer cost on the Noct several months ago was 3700.00 go figure.

Maybe I just don't have a good sense of humor but I don't think that was the least bit clever or funny. And I'd be willing to wager that the majority of those boxed sets will be sold to people in their 40's-50's. From what I observe, that's the age demographic that engages in the most outrageous displays of hedonism. Most of us old farts with more days behind us than ahead, have a more sane sense of value than younger guys in the throes of midlife.

You are, of course, factually correct. So the box will have to wait a couple of decades.

Associated Press -
An obscure manufacturer of cameras and lenses, M. Leica, while enroute to deliver the Sultan of Brunei a gold-plated lens to take pictures at the Royal Danish Wedding, lost control of his vintage Jaguar XK (with matching M6 Jaguar XK) and plunged to his oblivion off the Oresund Bridge today.
Sufferers of Obsessive-Compulsive disorder with camera-collecting fetishes across the globe fanned each other with Hermes scarves at the news. One collector in Japan was so distraught upon hearing of M. Leica's demise that he tore the shrink wrap from a WWII-vintage camera, leaving several fingerprints in the finish. The collector was committed for observation, but the delicate camera finish is expected to make a complete recovery.
Kevin,
This ass.press release contains a few inaccuracies. The Sultan of Brunei, that is Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah, is, according to my uncle, who went to Sandhurst with him in the late 60'; 'a dull weapons freak'. Does not sound like a photographer to me.
Being used to left hand side driving in Brunei - something they have picked up from the Brits, crossing the Øresund Bridge between Denmark and Sweden - both 'right handers', could be right out dangerous. Flipping over the rail, some 140 meters above the sea, would be an experience close to taking a trip with the roller coaster at Copenhagen Tivoli, before the car hits the sea with a speed right bellow 300/km - which would put a sudden end to this spectacular experience. Not recommended.
Except for the fact that trying to cross the Øresund Bridge with a Jaguar XK would keep the contender at a car workshop in Malmoe, Sweden, run by Thomas Möller, head of the Swedish Branch of Hells Angels. Held there at ransom, worth - a Noctilux with this humidor box....

Well the income from this will fund 15 man-months or so of M9 development so people shouldn't really complain.
Leica's plan is to sell only one final Nocti set to each dealer. Already to due high demand, some Chinese dealers are willing to pay the retail price to get that oh so special wooden box.
$15K Nocts seem outlandish at first, but if Leica can make that much money with the special Nocti sets, this is starting to look like smart merchandising.

Smart merchandising indeed. "As much as the market will bear". Good luck to them.
And let's not forget that this is purely a marketing exercise to sell off the last of a standard product. Car manufacturers have been doing worse for years. This is not one of the ghastly "special editions" of a few years ago, and should not be confused with such. This is packaging.
The whining and gnashing of teeth on this thread is not coming from anyone in the target demographic. Get over it.

Bill

No, but the target demographic is making the brand a bit of a laughingstock. Makes sense, from a fund-raising standpoint, to tart these lenses up and charge whatever the market will bear. But Leica's got too much experience pimping their own merchandise lately, methinks, for their long-term health.
Get over it.
Find another cliche, please, to express contempt for the opinion of fellow forum-members; This one's been used to death lately.

Stephen,
When did you sell 'a lense' (a bayonette in one end - a lense shade in the other) for $ 15,000 last time...?

Has anyone seen the prices being asked (and apparently obtained) for Alpa-fit 38/4.5 Biogons? I heard that the last-but-one new lens went for over $10,000 from a Russian dealer, not even as a special edition, but I have not verified this.
There were only 2 batches of 50.

If I was Kaufmann, I could double the price for last 100 noctilux. It is most likely that those products are aimed to collectors. I dont think that double price would matter for them why not one million dollars. But why we complain here if we dont intend to buy some wood to warm up.
Maybe I lost the sense but not Leica
At least it is not a million dollar piece.

I got no problems with Leica charging whatever they want for these things.

Just like comic books, stamps, baseball cards, and perhaps automobiles, for some folks there are ships, aircraft, buildings, small middle eastern countries, and these 100 Noctilux for others....
