Last 100 Noctili

I can´t understand the flurry about this „The last hundred” Noctilux offer. (May be I am to naïve 😉
The target group is obvious the collector which wants to have a Nocti with a special serial number and the story of the last noctilux lens produced at Elcan. The box and leaflet seems for me more like a give away.
This “last 100” offer is obvious not for users . Users who needs had their chance to order before the 1st may – or will have it as I suppose after Photokina.

The other side is the buisiness logic: these decantation of collectors flushes about 500 k € into Leica (Normal price about 4500 + 500 for box etc.) not a deniable sum for a weak manufactury.

Gosh, what a novelty.

Leica is not obliged to sell cheap lenses to whoever wants them.

It is however quite a good idea (from Kaufmann's point of view, and from the point of view of anyone who likes using Leicas) if the company makes a profit and stays in business. This will no doubt help.

How many of those who are currently complaining were going to buy a new Noctilux, and have been put off by this price rise? Because if you weren't planning on buying one, what are you complaining about?

For me, this is a perfect example of what's wrong with those who tell us what's wrong with Leica.

Ohh ... and I have no opinion on this type of marketing ... whatever floats your boat.

The Hexar RF Limted kit box is pretty garish after all ... but I'd have one. To spend all this money on a lens like a Noctilux and not use it ?????? ... strictly for the collectors this one!

Those photographers who still wish to own and use a Noctilux, i bet in six month they will be plenty to buy second hand, when the new one, maybe even more luminous, comes out at the Photokina. 😀

OK, not another rumour again, it's just a bet and i can loose it.

An obscure manufacturer of cameras and lenses, M. Leica, while enroute to deliver the Sultan of Brunei a gold-plated lens to take pictures at the Royal Danish Wedding, lost control of his vintage Jaguar XK (with matching M6 Jaguar XK) and plunged to his oblivion off the Oresund Bridge today.

Sufferers of Obsessive-Compulsive disorder with camera-collecting fetishes across the globe fanned each other with Hermes scarves at the news. One collector in Japan was so distraught upon hearing of M. Leica's demise that he tore the shrink wrap from a WWII-vintage camera, leaving several fingerprints in the finish. The collector was committed for observation, but the delicate camera finish is expected to make a complete recovery.
 
I think the box makes sense for both users, and collectors. When I first got my Noctilux it was mint and I immediately started seeking out specific cases and storage locations for it.

Because it's size is unique, my generic bags and their lens areas, and my existing stash of lens cases didn't accomodate the size, and I didn't want to wear out the included case which wasn't designed well for that lens, it was just an enlarged version of the case and foam for their smaller lenses that didn't give great support.

There were really only about 3 immediately available safe storage options: 1) wrap the lens up in microfiber and bubble wrap (whether camera is always attached or not), or 2) put the lens back in it's original packaging, or 3) insert the lens in a dust proof bag with dessicant.

The new box is simply pure practicality once you go beyond small sized lenses.

That's a very good way to make money. I don't think they will just stop the Noctilux after so many decades manufacturing it. Sadly enough, Leica is now playing the game of collectors, and we are shooters.

No is not - if it were, it would make the plural of "lux" = "li" which wouldn't sound so good anyway 😉 the correct latin nominative plural is "luces", so that would make it "noctiluces"; however, in English "lux" is considered to have an invariant plural form, so it would be 1 noctilux, 100 noctilux.

The fish are you and me. The little people. I doubt me and you can afford such high priced luxury items.

You're making a gross error by thinking all the Bill Gates of this world are fish and idiots for wanting and buying the most expensive stuff they can afford.

I am a collector. I collect things. I collect stamps, covers, etc. I understand collecting vintage automobiles - they are real. I understand collecting vintage cameras - they are real. I just never understood collecting manufactured collectibles, although I acknowledge there is a huge market for them. What's the point of collecting something that was manufactured to be scarce? It seems pointless to me. Nevertheless, I have a number of friends who are in just that business and they do well enough to buy several of the last Noctiluxes without blinking. Oh well, I guess that's why I'm still just a working stiff.

Folks, this is a special offer - it comes with a free camera - Not a M8 though -that box and fine drill, two lines diagonal over the precious laquer and hit it in the middle. That would be the ultimate pinhole camera 😀 Somewhere between f-64 and 256 depending on your drill....
 
Here's a horrible thought...

This is the much rumoured limited edition Noctilux people have been talking about. Forget a new version, you can have the old version in a stupid box.
 
For Kaufman who in his arrogant way proclaims every chance he gets on how people should photograph and how photography should be and then come up with these outrageously in bad taste packages for collectors is about as insulting to photography and photographers as it gets.

Most of those lenses will be bought by rich Japanese collectors, shrink wrapped and put in safe deposit boxes.
