First budget lens for a R2A?

I'd go for a 28/90 - for your R2a it doesn't matter because you choose the framelines yourself. But if you ever get a Leica M/Hexar/Ikon you will be able to chenge it to 35/135 or 50/75 by filling off a little metal on one of the flanges.
 
If you don't mind LTM adapters, I recommend the Industar 61 L/D as a standard lense. Amazing contrast & color and cheap.

Have not tried these lenses but heard they were good:
CV 50mm F1.4 Nokton
CV 35mm F1.7 Ultron (would prefer it over the f2.5 pancake as I appreciate the versatility of having a faster lense on a RF)

The only slight problem that I can see with the LTM adapters is the fact you have to get an adapter to bring up the correct framelines, though on an R2a this isn't a problem as you manually select....as you'll obviously be aware🙂

Personally I think they're brilliant and allow you to really open up the range of lenses available. Having said that I have an extremely small selection of lenses, mostly as I am a pro so have very little moeny to spend on a luxurious line up of RF gear😱 and also because I simply doubt I'd make the most of them. I tend to use a 35mm and a 50mm, occasionally using a 28mm that I bought specifically as a '35mm' for my M8. If I had the spare money and time I'd probably buy lots of the Industar/Jupiter/Elmar etc etc etc lens for their lack of coating and/or general 'look.'

There's so many to choose from that I'd really recommend trying to borrow a lens and seeing if you like it first....clearly there are some really cheap but good lenses that you could afford to buy anyway. I use a CZ Planar and the Canon 1.8 as my 50mm lenses but would love something softer and much less contrasty for specific purposes but will try a few before I buy as my knowledge is so limited on many RF lenses.

Having said all of that, I once borrowed a 35mm 1.7 Ultron from Tom77 here at RFF and it was a cracking all rounder.
 
I don't know... the Jupiter-8 is ok... kind of charming and all, but low contrast and not really all that sharp (even stopped down)... not saying it isn't worth the money, just that it's only ok (pretty lens on the camera though). The Industar-61L/D is a very good lens, it's just ugly (if that matters to you). I don't think you can collapse it all the way in, but people put a rubber ring on the Industar-22 (Elmar clones)... and those are very good coated lenses stopped down a bit. I am very happy with my Color-Skopar 50/2.5... very sharp and nicely pleasing... maybe a mixture of old and new feeling IMO... I like it. *I* haven't seen a nice LTM Summicron 50 for under $300... really wish I had 'cuz I would have bought it. They are nice enough stopped down, and probably the very cheapest 50 you can buy, but a Industar-26 is pretty good... might even get a good working FED-2 attached to it if you are lucky!

I am on the look out for my first RF and I'm currently undecided on the M2, M4-2 and the R2M(A) but at first glimse the CS looks like a good starter lens to me. More comments?

This has been said here thousand times, but notice that FSU lenses were built to slightly different standard than Leica lenses, so most of them will backfocus at close distances and wide open. This error is relevant at f-stops up to 2.8, so Jupiter-8 and Jupiter-3 and Jupiter-9 are prone to this. That is unless your sample has been Sweeney-fied or Coxon-ized (i.e. optimized for Leica).

Hi Soeren,

The 35 Skopar is a fine lens and quite a bargain. I don't know that there is a specific review of it that I can point to, but take some time to search around here and read user comments about it. I am sure you will gain confidence that you are on the right track for a first lens.
 
I've got a 50mm Colour Skopar I'm planning to sell as I've just bought a 50mm Planar.
Yours for £100 (roughly $200) for $230 I'll chuck in the LTM adapter (brings up the 50mm lines) and postage.

I already did and they confirmed my initial thoughts. Though a more objective (if such exist) view would be nice. I noticed it is lacking from the product list on the CV site and though it should be the same lens design as the PII lens I think Ill rather have the CS Classic. Should I move fast now or is there still time before it disapears?
