Hi,
I'm lurking around RFF again, because I've got an itch. The demons are telling me that a 35 Lux Asph would be the perfect partner for my M8. I've got a 35 Cron (Type IV) and a 50 Summilux, which I'm considering selling to fund my new obsession. I mainly use my Summicron, taking out the lux when I want the extra f stop. I love the look of the lux pictures, though, but the size stops me from using it for walkabouts. What should I do????

The Summilux 35asph has been reported with focus shift problems. I would not be surprised to see a redesign in the future.
In general, if you do not absolutely need the extra stop, a 35 Summicron asph is a wonderful lens, and less likely to break the bank. For speed and bokeh you could add a CV Nokton 35/1.2, very affordable, impeccable quality if you get one from Cameraquest and the best bang for the buck in fast 35 lenses.

Until recently I owned both the 35mm Asph Summicron and the 35mm Asph Summilux. The focus shift was minimal on the Summilux - it had been adjusted by DAG. The Summilux had been my favorite lens, but or reasons I can't explain.
I recently sold the Summilux only because I almost always chose the Summicron due to its compact size and I knew someone who wanted to buy it. I do miss the lens, but so far I don't miss the extra stop.
For a short time I also owned the Nokton 35/1.2. Other than testing for front/back focusing, I don't think I ever used it wide-open. When I need speed I use a 50 Summilux.
On the M8, when the extra stop is needed on the Summicron (rarely), I generally just change the ISO form 160 to 320.
Everyone is different, and ultimately only you can decide, but in your case I don’t think you need to change anything.

If you don't like the size of your 50 Summilux, you certainly will not like the 35 Asph Summilux, which is about the same size.
The more I read and consider your dilemma, I think you should ignore your impulse and be happy with what you have.

Hi, I have the 35/1,4 ASPH Summilux and with my sample I have had no problems. It is a splendid lens, but based on your comment about the size of the Summilux 50/1,4's size, I can't recommend the 35/1,4 ASPH for you based on your lens size remark. The 35/1,4 ASPH seems to me about the size of the ZM 35/2 which is too large for some: and you sound like one of the "some". I have never considered the size of the Summilux 50/1,4 ASPH as a problem, but I am not you.
Is there something in the 35/1,4 Summilux ASPH rendering that attracts you or is it just the extra stop?

I was in the exact the same boat as you very recently. I have the 35 cron IV and a 50 lux ASPH but decided I needed the 35 lux ASPH.
I tried three copies of the 35 lux, two of which were brand new from the dealer, and all three did not compare favourably to both the IV and 50 lux in terms of sharpness.
I did not want to pay top dollar for a 35 lux and then have to send it to Solms or DAG for a focus adjustment.
So I gave up on the 35 lux, sent the last one back and am telling myself I am happy with my current lenses (for the time being).

stick to the 35cronIV for your walkabout / street... but if you're doing lots of shots where you need super sharpness in low light, actually, the 50luxasph is a better fit.
the 35luxasph fits somewhere in the middle... as billblackwell said, if you don't like the size of the 50lux, you would likely not like the size of the 35luxasph either.

Thanks everyone.
Yes, it's the rendering of the lux that I love and some examples that i've seen from the 35 asph had me salivating; I was hoping to somehow merge the goodness of both of my current lenses into the 35 lux asph, but it doesn't look as though it'll work that way. Also, I imagined that the 35 lux would be the same size as the 'cron, but thanks for disabusing me of that false perception. It looks as though I'll hold on to both of them. I definitely needed talking down that time.....
