Just checking a few facts before I commit to buy a Summilux-M 50mm Version two.

1: It is the same as the third, pre-asph version except for filter size and chrome finish, isn't it?

2: What Leica clip on hoods are available for the second version and what are the product codes? I've ordered a Heavy2star hood off ebay but would prefer a clip on hood rather than screw in.

3: Can it be properly coded for the M8?

Thanks for your help.

1. No. Closest focus on the v2 is 1M. Closest focus on the v3 is 0.7M. Big difference. v2 uses a clip-on or 3rd party screw hood, the v3 has a built-in sliding hood - it sucks.
2. Don't know the answer to Leica hoods - most are bad. I use a CV 43mm screw-in available from the bartender.
3. AFAIK, yes.

The Leica Summilux 50mm f/1.4 Ver 2 can use the following clip on hoods:

01. XOOIM (first generation hood without vent)
02. 12521 (same as above, with numeric serial number)
03. 12586 (updated vented hood - different from XOOIM)

All the above hoods can be reverse mounted into the lens. To cap the lens with the hood reversed, you need Leica Front Lens cap 14163.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

There were no announced optical changes from Version 2 to version 3. However, Leica/Leitz has been known to make unannounced changes. For instance, There was a change in the rear element group of the Version 1. They changed from two thin singlets to one cemented doublet. (I think that happened going from version 1 to Version 2, can't recall for sure.) And there have been coating changes.

So there could have been some unacknowledged tweaks between versions 2 and 3, as well.

I've inspected closely several v2's and one v3, the coatings are absolutely identical. Oddly, I've seen more coating variation in current 50 Summicron formula and the 50/1 Noctilux.

That may be true for late v2 lenses but the earlier ones (1970s) I have owned and seen have a different coating, judging by the different reflected colors.

The 12586 hood can be both a little scarce and a little pricey, even by the standards of more common hoods like the 12585 (35/2+50/2) and the 12575 (90/2.8+135/4).

Thanks mate.
Just to check though, the 12586 hood is able to fit on the version with the 43mm internal thread, isn't it?
I've got a screw in hood on the way but would prefer the clip on option.

Yes it can fit if your filter is the original Leitz 43mm. Only that one. Most third party filter will stop the hood on the first set of 'teeth'. I have one on the version one right now with the Leitz 43mm filter. You can get it from ritzcam or adorama for about US$50.

If you click on the link I provided. There is a 12586 right now on the bay.

Cheers,
