Epson V200 anyone?

Hi

Does anyone have some experience with this scanner? I want it mainly for 2 things.

- To save a lot of money from the small prints i have to pay now, scanning the negative to pick the good ones using the computer.

- To post some images on the internet, maybe to start a photoblog

Will this scanner be enough? I like the compact size, and I don't need professional resolution, as i will send the negative to the lab if i'm printing big. -And of course, i'm on budget..

I use a Epson V200 and am generally pleased with the scans i get from my 35mm negatives. You can check out my flickr under 'Film'. I usually scan 1200 or 1600 dpi even though the scanner can do higher dpi than that. It is compact, easy to use and affordable.

A point to note though is that the V200 cannot scan medium format negatives. I found this to be a limitation when i got started on my Hasselblad 500 C/M, and have resorted to scanning the prints instead. I will probably continue to do this until i can afford a V700.

I would spend the extra money to buy a V500 or a refurbished 4490 from the Epson Store (often not in stock these days though) as opposed to a V200. The V500 is just a nice step up from a V200, and as the previous poster said, it allows you to do 120.

I have seen it new, not refurbed on the Epson site for $150. I have seen it on various instant rebate programs...ie, Staples at $150. Online at Best Buy, and the store matched the online price.

I would never buy a refurb on a scanner OR a printer. Too much risk on alignment issues when they are put back together. Seems like many have posted focus issues on refurb scanners.
 
I did order mine from the Epson site for $150 shipped. It was refurbished but basically "new" from epson. I think that's a pretty goo deal considering it can go upwards of $230 on other sites. I tend not to do rebates anymore because they're easily "forgotten" or just never arrive.
 
Thanks for the answers! I think im going to go for the V200, seems like its enough for what i need, but needed some feedback about the general quality of the scans.

Just to say that i got the V200! After the first tests i think im very happy with the results. Scanning at 1200 seems to be enough for the internet and as a light table, and I even like epson software (on mac). Pictures do need some unsharp mask though. Didn't try it yet at 4800.

I'm very unhappy with my V350.

The auto film loader has just broken (warranty here we come).

I can't scan at higher than 1200 dpi (the image just gets mushy).

Frequent film jams.

Various unknown 'hangs' from the software.

Probably other problems that i've forgotten.
 
Just to comment that today i scanned at 4800, original size, and the result is a 160 megas tiff that can be printed huge!. I was scanning at web size (800px) and 2400, but scanning with the original size default gives you a very big file. After the scan you need to do some unsharp mask, a bit of level adjustment and you are ready to print any size you want.

Soooo good!
