... or you can find a mint M6 classic for less than $1,500. IMHO, an MP is functionally a rebadged/retagged M6 classic.

I would be sceptical at buying a analog camera in 2008. In a few years they are worth 'nothing'. Unless you do your own B/W darkroom work as some here do. Even then, a well worn MP has a low value. Anything above 1,000 $ sounds a lot to me. For a mint version, possibly the double.

Myself? I bought a MP - mint - for 20,000 NOK (4,000 $) two years ago. I regret it today. From now on I will be buying only digital gear - and wide angle lenses that goes with a 1,33 crop factor for my M8.
 
Among the M's made in the last 20-25 years, the MP is among the best! They are smooth out of the box, they are sturdy and wear well. One of mine is a 2003 0.58 black paint version and it has had a lot of film through it. My only problem so far has been the typical dust in the finder of the first batch of 0.58's (the seal around the eyepiece did not seal properly). Leica sent me another seal and I installed it myself (no big deal). At the moment the film-pressure plate has come adrift and I need to tighten up the springs on it, but thats all after 5 years of hard use.
They do brass easily, around the straplugs, the lever edges and the back below the lever, but nothing you cant live with.

I have heard of small problem with the battery drain, but none of mine has had it. A couple of my M6TTL's went through batteries at an alarming rate, but where fixed and now work fine.

Heavy brassing could indicate "pro" use and it is definitely a good idea to have a warranty on it and have it checked out. Most likely there will be nothing wrong though!
I am more suspicious of "Mint" in the box 5-10 yera old cameras as that means that lubricants can have dried up and meter circuits have been unused for years and can oxidize or corrode.
Buy it and enjoy it. Must be hard having to wait for it though, but it will be worth it.

I bought it today by the Lay-By System, that is, 20 % deposit for now, and I will get it in hand when I pay the total after 3 months' time or earlier.

I took a snapshot of it with my cameraphone, sorry for the bad quality of the photo, but you can get an idea how it looks like ;-)

Whoa! Nice looking MP......Now you have to start thinking about which lens you want to start with. I suggest either a 35 or 50 Summilux Pre-Asph. They can be found for $1000-1300. If you're on a budget check out the Voigtlander lenses at cameraquest.com. Although I suggest getting a Leica lens right off the bat just to get it out of your system. You'll see what I mean heheh.......Plan on eating ramen for the next 6 months...: )
 
Naos is spot on. But if budget gets a bit tight, think about getting a 40mm Summicron; it's not shabby either.

PS-6 months of Ramen is tough!

Since I'm tight on budget now, I recently got a mint condition Voigtlander M Nokton 40mm f/1.4 MC on Ebay at the price of 345 Australian Dollars including Shipping. Cheers !!!

That does not look toq bad at all. I suspect mine is even more brassed (as well as some dings). Looks good and with the 40f1.4 - you have a sweet set up. Just file down the claw so that it shows the 35 frame and go forth and burn film!

Well, you don't have to go with soup, boil the noodle and pan fry it with vegetable and tomto sauce or hot sauce if you want a bit of spice.
 
I think I saw this camera on the weekend. If it's the one I think it is, there was a sh*t load of damage on the viewfinder windows caused by the idiot who owned it previously carelessly but deliberately 'aging' it with sandpaper. I'd be surprised if the camera had more than 20 rolls through it - internally it was spotless. The external marks were definitely deliberately inflicted.

Check the view through a good MP prior to buying - those scratches seriously impede your ability to focus and guarantee that the MPs lovely "flare-free" finder will flare in any direct light.

Check this and make sure the camera works.

That's right Marty, that's what they told me too. The original owner is a rich guy who bought it for fun for a little while, then got fed up with it and sold it back. If that's really true, then I find this really weird but quite funny though.

Anyway I did check everything, and I don't really care about cosmetic condition, this Leica MP works perfect at least for me, otherwise I would not have bought it.

Well at least, when I get it after full payment, I'll be using it and treating it as a true Leica Rangefinder Camera should be ;-)

My first M was an used M6. The previous owner rarely used it but he dropped a lens on the camera while he was fiddling around and made a ding next to the film counter. He sold it so he can buy another one to collect. I had a lot of fun using it and only sold it to get an MP. Congrat again for your purchase and hope you can have lots of fun using it.
