New DRF's via rumour mill

Is the the camera on the left in the above photo an SP 2005 body? With user marks on the camera back??? If so, its great to see that one of these wonderful cameras is getting a solid workout!

did tom just confirm that leica is releasing a 50/.9 and 28/1.4 at photokina?! ; )

It is a persistent rumour that they will release these two lenses in Sept. I know that prototypes have been spotted in Germany, but I have no official confirmation, nor do I expect to get one before Sept 15, which tends to be the Pre Photokina release date.
They obviously need some "sparkle" at the show and these two lenses would give them some. I do hope that they have something interesting regarding the M8 - maybe a mini M8 with the Panasonic/Olympos 4:3 sensor.

I'm afraid so. Had to wait until they came down to closer to user prices. Having a blast with it.

Vince,
Sounds to me the SP is having a blast too...

I sold my vintage 1.8 so I am using the new one now.

Last nikon patents seems to prove dRF

Last nikon patents seems to prove dRF

See here:

Nikon patent seems to me like an optical-digital viewfinder option for a rangefinder camera. You can have a wide optical viewfinder with a digital image inside to focus.
Also, rumors about a new non-bayern sensor about a new 7mp Fx sensor that could solve the problems of that short lens-to-sensor distance could well be this one:
http://www.nikonwatch.com/2008/07/28/non-bayer-dichroic-sensor-in-the-works-again/
Who knows... if Nikon presents a FX rangefinder with optical-EVIL viewfinder and a "foveon" sensor, i'm ready to buy.

Photokina 08 is coming up very soon, all camera manufacturers seem to have had their "prelaunches", Nikon has announced the D90, lot´s of pictures of it and from it on the net etc and so on..... but absolutely nothing concrete on any rangefinder.

So, I guess we have to assume that at leat for now it was all rumours, or ?

With the Nikon F they also established themselves as the "photographers" camera manufacturer!

I think that is very true. I used to shoot Canon and their bodies never felt right to me. IMO their ergonomic design fights you, if you want to run the camera in manual mode. To me the EOS series never felt like it was designed by a photographer.

Then an F3 fell in my lap; my first Nikon and from the moment I picked it up it just felt right- like a Leica.

I also have an original F, which basically is a Nikon RF body with a mirror box bolted on to it. It's is a brilliant design and as pure bred a photographic tool as a Leica M.

So, while I am a dyed in the wool Leica man I would be very interested in a Nikon RF, unless Leica performs a minor miracle next month.

As you said, it would have to be very simple, compact, low key and full frame. Nice RF unit. If the frame lines compensated for lens magnification I would probably faint. No gimmicks. No AF, none of that crap. An RF with AF is no longer an RF. It's a point and shoot with interchangeable lenses.

I suspect it wouldn't be cheap, but if it's as good as the D3/D700 I would be willing to take the hit.

I don't care what mount it is. All I need is a 35 and 50 and I'll scrape the money for that together eventually.[/QUOTE]

Cant wait for Photokina this year. No interest in 50f0.9 lenses or ultra fast wides, but a Drf that my 35 stays a 35 on is tempting. It would not replace film in my shooting but be an additional "image" maker.

Same here. Nothing will replace Tri-X for me, but I want a FF digital that will take manual focus lenses, for shooting color.

I love color negative (up to 400asa ;-) ), but I would go bankrupt shooting it and I have no desire to develop C41 at home. Also clients want digital for that sort of work. So, digital it is.

Indeed, the top plates are almost identical: similar size, shutter release coaxial with the advance lever, shutter speed dials going the same way as the proper Leicas... ;)

Only differences are that the F3 is missing the top script, and the Leicas are missing the best autoexposure compensation ever designed... :bang:

I am a little surprised this didn't end up in this thread yet

Rangefinder magazine had a very big advertisement for a BIG announcement by Nikon on Feb 09

The key to this its with WPPI (wedding & portrait photographers international) ... that to me points as well to a DRF

It could easily be the release of the other rumour- a modular D3xx 24mp built for studio use.

Jaifo's post on optical-electronic-viewfinder patent has got me all excited. What else but a rangefinder with this patent ?

True, but I figured if that was the case it would be in many other magazines; at the moment it only seems to be in Rangefinder magazine.

Though this might have to do with its association with WPPI

Why would an association with the WPPI imply "Rangefinder?"

Just wondering....

I didn't explain that well... WPPI is more known for their support for wedding photographers

Nikon already made a huge dent in that field with the D3 and the D700

More megapixels is not a huge issue for wedding photographers (portrait photographers I could see would still want a higher MP version of the D3)

Plus the higher Megapixel version of the D3 is rumored to be announced at Photokina, not in Feb 09?

So wouldn't a rangefinder (in an advertisement in Rangefinder magazine) be the next logical step for attracting wedding photographers?

Unless this is going to be a new flash system, or perhaps some sort of new service that is in association with WPPI. Though if its going to warrant its own announcement at the MGM grand, wouldn't be pretty ground breaking? The fact that its being announced with the WPPI means they had some sort of influence over it? WPPI is a major associate with Rangefinder magazine... I don't think that its a coincidence

i think there will be a dRF but this 'BIG' announcement is definitely not it. most likely a medium format camera for photogs. if every amateur armed with a d300 thinks he can do a wedding, what will proper photogs shoot? maybe stick two of those D3 sensors together and voila!

in that case, it would be a painful long wait to see Nikon's new baby. I'm thinking no new SP-D by Photokina means they missed the 60th anniversary plus maximum attention. A RF meant for wedding shooters means a pro-level RF. I'm currently reading this with interest.

The one issue I caught of Rangefinder Magazine had nothing at all to do with rangefinders...maybe 1 article. I rember feeling ripped off.
