Help me get rid of Newton Rings!

I dont really understand it! the last couple of years that I have been shooting medium format I have never had this problem with my scanner (canon 8600T i think) but all of the sudden every scan I do seems to be riddled with these damn rings. I have tried weighting my negs as they dry to keep them flat, after they are dried I place them between the heavy books but still no luck. Are there any other solutions out there? I was thinking of getting rid of the holder and just sandwich the neg between the scanner and a piece of clean glass. My rolleiflex and I would be really grateful of any help!

I don't know if you can buy them for your model of scanner, but I know you can buy anti newton ring glass holders for scanning negs.

Francisco is spot-on! I have one of the Better Scanning holder plus ANR glass for my Epson 4490, and it made a huge difference.

This is extremely simple and works every time for me.

I roll the negative up tight in the reverse direction to the natural curl and slip it into a 35mm film canister or something of similar size and make sure it has been in there for several hours before removing it and scanning. With 120 I actually slip a film canister over each end of the rolled up negative. You can do this whether it has been cut into strips or still in one piece but you'll find that when you go to scan it will sit almost dead flat. You're not really doing anything by placing the negs between books etc as you're not countering the curl with a totally reverse action and introducing some memory into the material.

Spending money on newton glass or special holders etc is a waste of dough and not necessary if you do this and scan fairly promptly!

Great idea, I have the same scanner and the same problems, I will try that tonight!!!! I was going to buy an other scanner, no need to now, great!!!!

I used the Better Scanning anti-newton glass and all of a sudden found myself with newton rings! (and yes, I had the correct side down). Go figure. I stopped using them and they disappeared. Now I just scan with that standard Epson MF holders. Go figure...
