Fake Summicron

I have what is supposed to be a 35mm Summicron. I thought it was 4th generation or at least that is what I was told. I registered at the Leica cite and started to put in all the serial numbers of my stuff. When it came to this lens, I could not find the serial number. I have looked everywhere. Around the lens it says "Leitz lens made in Canada summicron-M 1:2/35"

Has anyone heard of counterfeit lenses? I bought it about 3 years ago. Does anyone know where the serial number could be hiding?

I would have thought you are worrying unnnecessarily. I have one of these lenses and its so beautifully made I could not imagine anyone successfully counterfeiting one. Also I have been on these forums for years and have NEVER heard of such a thing. Mine is packed away so I cannot get to it to find out where the serial no is located. But Leica sometimes makes them hard to find - I have an old Elmar 50 and it tooks me weeks to find it printed in tiny letters on a ring around the front lens and only then with a magnifying glass.

On a version IV 35mm Summicron?? Mine is smack on the front, like all modern Leica lenses. What you're describing is the version II, the one with the quirky and fragile aperture ring/selector...which makes sense if the serial number isn't anywhere to be found on the front.
 
The serial # on mine starts 3307, which according to the usual websites means it was made in 1984, and is a version 4. I had the same problem finding the serial # until it was pointed out. Weird place to put it, but it's there.

Huh. Mine starts with 3444. I guess that makes it made in 1987.
 
Thanks. Its on the back. I emailed Leica and they did not think to tell me to look there. Just one reason why this forum is great.
