Kodak Ektar 100

I have some coming too. The first roll will go in my Bessa R. I hope to use all my LTM lenses with the roll. It is hard to believe, but the last two weeks of October and the first three weeks of November are really beautiful in the area around San Francisco.

I actually am (or at least think I still am) a ProPass member, and that is indeed free to sign up for. There's also a ProPass Premium membership that's meant as a means of networking for working pros, as well as getting a listing on Rochester's "Where To Find a Pro Photographer" database. Might cost something, and you might need some creds to get that. That isn't so much my beat anymore, so I haven't inquired.

But I don't think you had to be in ProPass to get samples of the new Portra 160 films when they were announced, and, given how many people on the list, including me, actually got samples that time, Kodak seemed to be handing those out like Reese's Cups on Hallowe'en. We'll see if any shows up on my doorstep before Adorama or B & H get any.

I just wanted to share my own experience with Ektar 100 (full disclosure Kodak is a sponsor of my long term project, the Europeans, and brought one of my images to promote Ektar).

I normally shoot Tri-x but when I got an email asking if I would be interested in testing the new Ektar I said yes. I remember shooting the Ektar 25 as a teenager and thought it would be a fun exercise. So I went to the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and shot a bunch of available light images of flowers since they said the colors on the film were amazing.

They were indeed. This film has a color saturation much close to slide film but with the increased latitude of a negative. What impressed me most is how scannable the film is. On many of the images I did not retouching other than cropping out the excess black that my Nikon Coolscan V captured. I shot these images with my EOS 3 and an extension tube on my 85mm f1.8 lens and scanned them using the Nikon with Digital ICE (I scanned a few without ICE and the results were the same but slightly dustier). Kodak was impressed enough to buy an image and I have to say having shot a lot of color neg in my earlier days the results I got far exceeded my expectations.

I am also impressed that Kodak is still invested in making film and coming out with new films. This is the best argument against all those who say film is dead.

Damaso, those are really great, I hope my first roll is anything like that. I also ordered some from Freestyle. It was very nice of you to share, better photography to me is all the small details that add up to a good image. Kodak seems to be trying. Their Tmax400 (new) is a good addition, and this looks like an interesting new film.

If the Digital Truth did not work for you then try www.digitaltruth.com and click on the Kodak link and then follow the links to 35mm film. I just checked the original link I provided and it worked for me.

Regarding BKA... we are a wholesale distributer and manufacturer to the photographic industry and our products are available through camera shops and photo labs.

Earlier in this thread, i posted that Pictureline had it in stock. Well, they sorta did. I ordered ten rolls. They sent me only two, but never notified me that the rest was in back-order status. Luckily i received the 'light' package soon enough before my travel next week to get some from another source.

Freestyle had it in stock yesterday, and the order was shipped.

Those who have seen results: Does it seem like Portra is warmer, or does that even matter with neg film when it's scanned?

I got to B & H a bit before 5. Asked for five rolls at the film counter, then asked about when they actually got the stuff in stock. I was told they got it in just today, and they'd gone through several hundred rolls already (they apparently got "a ton" of it). I loaded up one of my Hexars right after leaving, which allowed me to reprise one of the very first shots I took with my first Hexar RF and 28 M-Hex when that was all I had. 'Twas hetting a bit dark, though, so I was heading back into right film, wrong light terriitory. I did a few more "even-wronger-light" shots before needing to head for a tech gig. Of course, I'll have the camera with me tomorrow (going to be even busier than today).

So, to recap: B & H really, truly has Ektar 100. If you want it, there it is, go and get it. (And, I won't quote that Badfinger song again...at least not tonight). 😉

While reading all the post about Ektar samples,
mostly everyone said Kodak would not be sending
any samples. I guess you should be patient
since I got a 36 exp. roll today from them. Has anyone
else received any ?
