They sell to rich, to very rich people and for the ones that have a lot of money to spend and do not know how. Or to the winners of Euromillions (EU persons know what I'm refering to).

My guess is a mix of 1 and 2, i.e. they use their ebay front to generate a "price list" used as a sales argument, to talk nouveau rich wannabe collectors into overpriced items from some appearently unconnected shop. "Hey, 5,000 is cheap, the same went on ebay for 12,000 last year".

With prices several times those of regular Sotheby's auctions, they certainly aren't catering for experienced high-end collectors.

And in fact, if the purpose is to generate a false market, it can be done very simply by having two or three other accounts for the purpose of shilling prices up. There would be no complaints through the auction system, AND occasionally a valid bidder might be pulled into the auction action. I do know that some sellers use inflated BIN prices to seduce bidders to higher prices. I never let BIN prices influence my assessment of value. I always do my research on "completed listings". Even then, I require a pattern of prices in "completed listings", rather than just the last 2 o 3 completed items.

I bought a lens from their HK unit last year.:bang: When it arrived, it was trash...aperture ring was loose and lens was extremely dirty...it was rated by them as a 9+. To their credit, I sent the lens back and got a refund of my purchase price within a week. Of course I had to eat the shipping costs. I think their philosophy is to send out crap in hopes the return shipping costs will deter people from returning items.
