Convert M8 RAW File to Black and White Jpeg

Hi All,

Could someone give me a quick tip on how to proceed to convert a RAW File to a BW Jpeg using Capture One furnished with the Camera ?

Just move the saturation slider to the left (-100). This is BW. After that you can play around with white balance and colour balance to change the greys. It works but I think with other photo editing tools you can get better results.

well, my C1 wont produce a true BW image no matter how much i push the slider to the left... there is no proper zone system there...
so what i do is save in TIFF 16bit and do the BW job later in CS3, much better and more control.

Most times I just use my conversion software to "develop" the RAW file to JPG format then process it in Photoshop or equivalent (In truth I now mainly use Corell Paintshop Pro as it has everything a photographer needs (maybe not everything a graphic designer needs) and is quicker and easier to use than Photoshop. Such image processing software allows more control such as thru Channel Mixer and a native Corell black and white conversion tool which is very intuitive.

There are also a few freeware plugins that also do a good job of black and white conversion. Cybia Fotomatic BW plus is one you may wish to try although it only uses presets and therefore is less flexible. But it never the less is pretty good -especially for the price :^)

Another is just called BW conversion - not sure who makes it but here is a link http://www.photo-plugins.com/Plugins/Plugins/B-W-Conversion-2.html ) These plugins only support JPG not RAW files. Hence the need to convert first.

Pretty much the only time I do more than use my RAW software to convert to JPG is when a photo needs a lot of effort fix a badly under or over exposed section. This is better done form a RAW file. The rest of the time, the image processing software working on a JPG seems better.
 
In C1 LE (this is mac so windows mmv) click top menu bar Capture One, Select Preferences, select Camera, select Use profile by default (not the For camera selection) select other profiles. This opens a long list of options try Phase One effects B/W or usually better Phase One effects Panchromatic or yellow filter.
 
I agree with Chris. Using the black and white profiles available allows you to then vary the tonal scale using the saturation slider. You can duplicate yellow filters, for instance, and increase or decrease the intensity of the effect. Back in "the day", nobody dreamed of shooting black and white without some kind of filter and when you see the effects on your skys you will know why.

A question on the use black and white profile

Under Capture One LE 4.7, I cannot find any camera profile in the preferance. I got JFI Black and white profiles (.icm put to the folders the readme.txt said and I also tried to rename to .icc .) The preference option does not have a camera.

The only option I can find profile is on the processing manual but it does not show any profile useful. JFI does not show (either .icc or .icm).

Any hint how to proceed? Thanks first.
