I have been quite curious about the Ricoh GRIIIx for a while. I had the Ricoh GXR with the Leica M camera module for some time and liked it a lot. But I 've been hesitant to buy the GRIIIx due to its control layout ... The X1/X2 have a nearly perfect (IMO), utterly simple control layout. Well, near perfect for me anyway. 😉

I know the Ricoh is a fine camera, but something about the simplicity of the X1/X2 really appeals to me.

The handling of the X series is definitely better, especially with fat fingers or gloves. Especially exp comp is annoyingly easy to change on the GRIII - but most can be customised, the jpg recipes are amazing (there, I said it), and overall image quality really good.

That's one of the "advantages" of the X2 ... the notion of a kit is pretty limited so you can spare yourself the decisions about which lenses and other accessories. Most of the time, I find myself dropping just the camera or the camera fitted with the grip into my small carry bag and not worrying about anything else. If I'm in a kind of purist mindset, I fit the OVF and turn off the LCD ... and it still fits in the small carry bag, only weighs marginally more.

I find the same when I go walking with the Makina 67 and any of my older fixed lens film cameras. To me, it's liberating ... I'm freed of making lens decisions and just work with what is there. 🙂

A really funny thing is I have a grip for the X1/2. Got it years ago in anticipation of purchasing a camera, but other things got in the way.

Well, after due consideration and the realization that I had a perfect X2 now as well, I looked at the purchase paperwork for the X1 (which needed an internal battery service) and decided that extra $200+ wasn't worth spending, and the seller offers a full satisfaction refund for up to 30 days. So it's on the way back to them now, and I'll carry on with just the X2.

Good news is that this will spring free a little extra dosh for the next ridiculous project ... 😉

... Oh yeah: and I have a big backlog already of X photos to finish and post...

BTW: I found a nice adapter that allows me to fit filters and lens accessories with a 52mm thread onto the X1/X2 by replacing the trim ring around the lens. It arrived yesterday evening and proves to be very nice quality.

Minor mistake: I must have double clicked the order button because I was sent (and charged for) two of them. Doh! Happily, they're not expensive ... I paid about $16 apiece including the shipping ... so no big deal. But if anyone else with an X1 or X2 would like one, drop me a private message. I can't imagine that I actually need two of them. 😉

Inspired by this tread, thanks G. on a recent short trip to the Alps I brought with me beside the M7 my now 15 years old Leica x1.
The idea was to use the M7 with 100 iso film in it for daylight shooting and the x1 for interior shots ath 1.600 iso. But because of small size and weight I ended to shoot mainly the x1 😎

Usually I shoot DNG and B&W jpg and once imported in LR after a preliminary look I delete the jpgs and process the DNG into a B&W image.

But this time I was surprised by some of the jpgs and decided to keep them as they are!

Here are a few of them, all dhot at iso 200 F8.



before somebody asks yes, I'll process the dngs soon or later!

Very nice! I particularly like the last one, of the open air concert.

I haven't posted much recently (due to too many other things going on...) but the X2 I ended up with is being used a lot. Really should get a few things posted... 🙂
