Has anyone had this happen to there Zeiss or Leica viewfinder?
Frustrating morning, looks like I'm going to be "using the whole finder" until I can grab a metal one.
Anyway, be gentle with those finders!

The plastic ones are indeed flimsy, but the metal ones are amazingly nice. The 28 is a stunner, and the 28/35 is also terrific.

Is that a CV 25mm? Mine fit's pretty tight on the ZI and Leica, but just tight enough on the Bessa L. The CV 12mm VF is a very solid metal one. Sorry to read that yours broke.

I dropped a Contax G 21 mm finder on the ice in the frozen north, and other than a scratch and a little bend on/of the front rim of the finder, nothing happened. All metal, no less, except for the glass optics, of course.

Bummer. My CV21 is plastic, but the 35 is metal and seems strong enough.

It's the 21mm Finder,
I went to slide it off, s'pose I was pushing at a slight angle? but it just snapped off the hot shoe mount. I was shocked.

Unfortunately no warranty.
I think I'm just going to end up getting the Zeiss one eventually.
The thing that's a doozie is that I need a 21 and a 28mm one and that's like a good 700 dollars in finders!

I would check with Cameraqest,com and see if he cant you a replacement shoe. It is not a big deal to install and even the one you have can be crazy glued in place. I did fall on a Nikon SP with the 21 and the finder at one time. The foot came off - the finder survived (and so did the lens - though the vestigal lens hood looks a bit worse for wear). The camera just accumulated a couple of new nicks and dents among the existing ones.
I was going to Japan shortly after and asked for a spare foot when I got there. Got it and installed it - no problem.
The plastic, break-away foot, actually serves a purpose. IF you drop the camera, the stress is on the foot of the finder and if it snaps, it also dissipates the force of the impact, rather than distort the top plate or punch it down ward. This said, I too prefer metal finders ( i am just holding on to the camera with more authority!) as they are a bit more compact - and in the case of the Zeiss ones -spectacular to use!
This problem is not specific to CV finders, I have bent or crashed multiple Leica finders too. I did snap off the feet on a couple of Leica 21 finders (plastic ones) as well as crunching a 21 metal finder so hard that it bent the top-plate! Finders are prone to getting hit - and the plastic foot seems to be the weak spot.
Back in the days when I was using SLR's and flash - I used the Vivitar 283's and they had the same break away foot. Some aftermarket guy made a metal version, but after having bent multiple F2' tops with it, I found out that it was cheaper to have the foot snap than trying to fix Nikon SLR's top plates!!!!

If you're ready to spend 700 dollars on those 21 and 28 finders, why not simply buy a Bessa R4A or R4M?
