My LTM adapter and M42 adapter arrived 2 days apart. I have a Flickr set with some pictures and comments. The 1st and 3rd picture are taken with a 25/4 Snapshot-Skopar and the middle with a Summitar 50/2.

All the recent discussion regarding the G1 ( and adaptors ), certainly gives much food for thought, but how do you guys rate this camera's dynamic range? - allways a main cause of concern in my digital aspirations.
Dave.

Blending images

Blending images

I think the blending of five or six images of slightly different exposure, is the new 'fun' way of addressing the issue! 🙂
Dave.

Have you seen my daughter moving? I would be lucky if I could get her to stand still for one frame let alone five or six. 🙂

I don't know how similar the sensors are but I have to be very careful with my E-410 so as to not blow highlights. I usually underexpose by 1 stop or more and sometimes, along with that, use the popup-flash at 1/64 power.

When I blow highlights in a Oly ORF (Raw) file not even dcraw can help me recover them.

One of the great advantages of the G1 electronic viewfinder is that you can display the histogram in the viewfinder, click the wheel located under your right index finger and over or underexpose to get the histogram to where you want it. It reduces the guesswork on the highlights.

Gordon, I'd like your opinion on working with the histogram. My experience with my G1 (and I have the latest rev of firmware) is that only the histogram in playback is an accurate indication of exposure. The "live" histogram doesn't resemble the playback histogram; there are significant differences, enough so that the live histogram is a useless feature.

Now, I'm willing to accept the possibility that I'm not using some arcane menu setting on the camera properly, which may account for the difference.

The other thing that makes the live-view histogram useless for me is that I'd like to manually adjust the exposure ahead of time, so I'm certain I won't blow the highlights. Since the live histogram is relative to the live view image, and the live view image automatically gains up or down in varying light to give the same relative brightness in the viewfinder, then as you adjust the aperture or shutter speed with the front wheel the live view histogram will not show these changes; you have to chimp the playback image to see the results in the playback histogram.

So I end up controlling highlights like with any other digicam, by under-exposing by guess work, reducing the bar-graph meter in the display by one notch for instance, and hope for the best on the playback image. This is not the same thing as having a live view histogram that will tell you ahead of time (or in "real time", if you will) whether the highlights are blown.

So what am I doing wrong?

Joe,

I had to think about what was happening. Too many new things all at once. I was using the exposure bias. I had a window that was blown out and, when I adjusted the exposure bias, it moved the histogram over and the viewfinder showed the detail throught the window.

By the way, I've been printing these pictures. I have a HP B9180 and I'm printing on 13"x19" Epson Premium Luster. The images, at native resolution printed at 300dpi, come out to 13.33" x 10". I couldn't be happier with the prints. Well, I suppose I could but I would run the risk of my head exploding.

Hi Folks,
My adapters arrived yesterday so I will enter into the "adapter madness" realm too. I haven't had much time to "play" but I grabbed a quick couple of images this afternoon of my son. This one is with an Ultron 35/1.7 wth a screw mount to m-mount adapter going to an M to MFT. Yup, it worked fine, actually I thought the fit was better than the M39 to MFT adapter. (G1 "Porn" shot with D LUX 4.)More work this weekend.

PB - thanks. I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the focus worked with the magnifier. It's easy to turn on and off without your eye leaving the viewfinder. I used aperture prioirty and the exposures were pretty good too. As I mentioned the stacked adpaters were fine too. Now all I need is some time to make some more images - hopefully over the weekend.

Adapter review

Adapter review

I thought I might add a few words about the adapter I used for the photos at the top of this thread. I actually have two adapters. One for Leica thread mount and one for Pentax M42 thread mount. Photos from both are at my Flickr set: Panasonic G1 adapter madness. I bought them both on eBay. The Leica thread mount adapter on the left was from jinfinance in China. It was $78.50 with free shipping. It focuses at infinity and mounts on the G1 just fine. The Pentax M42 thread mount adapter on the right was from ciecio7 in Poland. It was $50 plus $8 shipping. It wouldn't focus at infinity. I contacted the seller and he quickly replied with a solution. There are three set screws holding the bright M42 threads in the black body. I removed the M42 thread body and there was a shim under it that I removed. It then focused at infinity. Both adapters have a similar design and work as they should. They both mount on the G1 smoothly. I'm most happy with them.

These are the two Leica thread mount lenses I have that will mount on the G1.

My Summitar 50/2. The Summitar won't collapse without hitting something.

My CV 25/4 Snapshot-Skopar.

The other LTM lens I would like to use is the Jupiter 12 but there is no way it will fit.
