Street photography code of conduct

I was watching this new video from Seconds2Real (great pool btw!) and kind of reacted that all the participants took more or less the same pictures as the others in the group. They saw "a picture" and the others noticed that and shot their own "version" of it.

If I go out with a friend and do some shooting (I prefer going out shooting alone) this is more or less understood that that is my picture/my find, so the other person rests their camera and waits till the other person has taken his/her picture.

How do you operate when out shooting with a friend/friends?

I'll rip off their idea shamelessly. You're paying them a compliment by saying in effect that they saw something you didn't.

I hope I don't look like them when I go shooting. They might as well have held a giant banner up and shouted through a PA system.

Looks way too noticeable for my tastes. It seems to work for them, power to them. To me, 4 people walking around with cameras taking turns squatting in succession, taking the same picture. No thank you.

I like to be by myself or just one person. And I really have to like that person too.

I have to admit, it got a few good shots, but their technique makes me quite uncomfortable to be honest.

I choose a more imaginative class of friend. 🙂

They look quit normal to me. At least they look much more normal then me.
But what's the use of this video anyhow? Should we learn something from it? Are they special or something. I just don't get it.
Maybe it learns us that we always should go out shooting alone.

I watched it and I got the feeling they were kinda posing for the video camera, not really seriously shoting if you know what I mean. I could be wrong. I like their site and photography, but this seems like a promo piece for them more than anyhting else. I cant shoot a group ike that at all.

It's one thing to take a shot of a subject that somebody else noticed and try to do something different with. But at 1:30 or so where they form a queue to take exactly the same photo four times in succession seems kind of ridiculous to me.

If I was out on the street and saw them all line up to take a photo of me I think I'd probably have to laugh at them, because to my mind they look kind of ridiculous. It seems to work well enough for them though.

Surely it isn't real, I mean they can't honestly shoot like that all the time? I think we should make out own, anyone up for it?

This may just be an isolated incident, but I can't imagine being creative working like this in a group. But I bet they had fun! More power to them I guess 🙂

I'm with chambrenoir, I don't think I'd enjoy shooting in a group...photography's a solitary activity for me.

Good lord. I like the website allot and the photos are fun to look at but that video is rather painful to watch.

For whatever it's worth, I've been out shooting with a small group a number of times. And no one ever seemed bothered that someone else in the group "copied" their shot. If anything, they seemed flattered. But what I've found more interesting is that the "copied" shot never turned out exactly like the "original" shot. We each have our own eye, position ourselves slightly differently when taking a shot, frame/compose slightly differently, etc. Heck, I can hardly take two of the same shot myself. Something is always different between them, particularly when taking shots of a dynamic scene. None of this is to say that you have to like shooting with others, that's entirely up to you, nor that you should try to copy others' shots. But I don't find the idea of trying to take a similar shot to someone I'm shooting with all that abhorrent. And I do find that I learn from observing what someone else is shooting.

I get this reaction all the time. Problem is, it's usually because i haven't taken a picture all day! 😱

Did something like that ago, "teaching" an acquaintance how to use an Leica IIIc. I was acomanying her and was there form her questions. If I saw something that interested me I made a photo of it. Actually each of us was interested in different subjects. A great part of my instructions was actually telling her "OK why don't you go over and ask him/them?".
Interestingly a bunch of people already asked me to go shooting with them.....
