I need to know how to remove the built-in hood and separate the helicals for cleaning/repacking

Pls be careful. I heard that it's much more difficult to disassemble/assemble 50 ASPH than other old leica lenses.

Then there's always the colmination problem.

I think he meant "spherical" and not "aspherical", so my guess he talks about the last pre-ASPH version.

Yes, I do indeed mean the spherical one.
I fear there's some Loctite-type substance involved, and therefore heat might be necessary...

Troll or not, send it off to somebody who can do it right.
If it is the 1959/61 model, the interior coatings are to soft for home cleaning even if you could get it apart and reassembled CORRECTLY.

Thanks, Ronald
Thanks, Ronald
Instead of calling it a "late spherical" I should have said it's from the late 90's - 0.7 meter close focussing limit.
I sent it to the single best specialist I know and it came back repacked with much heavier damping grease. Previously I could whip the focussing ring from infinity to near-focus limit in a heartbeat, and this allowed me to get shots I would have otherwise missed.
So, If I'm going to be this picky about this aspect it's time to get in and do it myself. I've had good luck with other lenses (and the damping grease kit from I-can't-quite-remember-which-supplier) but this one resists my efforts to get inside, and an expert has confirmed my fear that it is, indeed, Locktite that keeps it so impenetrable.
