I guess they stole a page from cell phones or iPods, but unless the color plates are removable and snap-on like those on cell phones, stocking all the possible color combinations will be a logistical nightmare.

Hey, marketing in the trenches. Sell stuff anyway you can, besides the others do it with useless features, at least this is something new. Also, you can buy a body for a little more than a P&S, so tell you wife you are getting her a DSLR, 'what color do you want.' And you can then use it as a backup.
