Loose Leica M lens red dot.

The red dot has fallen off my Summicron M 2/35. What's the best glue to stick it back on again? I guess I need some that won't damage the paint on the barrel, any suggestions?

I can't really speak from my own experience on camera, but how about paste type glue for embrem/trim? You can buy this at auto parts shop. This is for metal painted/chromed surface and plastic/rubber so it shouldn't damage the finish on lens nor the plastic dot. Put tiniest bit.

The knee pads (rubber) are intact on my triumph's wet painted tank without damaging anything for past two years.

Just a wide guess and my two cents.

Leica (NJ) gives those out for free if you ask, & they informed me (via email) that "superglue" was OK.

Rubber cement isn't all that long lasting. Contact cement might be better. I've used epoxy.

With the value on certain lenses, would think it would be a gold button. ;-)

I had success using regular Super Glue. The key is not to use too much and have clean flush surfaces.

I stabilized the lens (also a 35/2.0 Cron BTW) with the red dot cavity facing up. I used a syringe to control the application of the glue in the recessed pocket. Less is better. The result came out pro, like from the factory.

BTW I used a Q-Tip to dab and just wet the bottom of the Red Dot. Tweezers help ensure carefull placement.

Clean with acetone and do not touch. Medium viscosity super glue , same as CA glue. about 1/2 drop.

Keep the acetone confined to the mating surface so as not to mar the dot.

Hobby shop for the glue. Acetone is fingernail polish remover or just get some from the hardware store.

I also added a dot to my 85/2 Nikkor. It makes it easier to mount the lens by feel. Both are fastened with epoxy.

Very cool. 🙂 The one LTM lens I'd like to stick a dot on is my 35mm UC-Hex -- the barrel is wide enough to completely cover the little red notch on the LTM-M adapter, so it's hard to mount by feel or visual -- but I can't bring myself to "deface" the little gem.

Leica Dot Cement. $69.95 for a three-drop tube. But you can glue three dots with it. The the tube is so cute, all white with the red Leica script.

OK here's what I do. 1. Clean the surfaces with alcohol. I would not use acetone as it will probably remove the paint--just what you didn't want to do. 2. I mix up some five minute clear epoxy and spread it thin on a card. 3. I use a little piece of masking tape to pick up the dot, set it in the glue, lift it, and set it into place on the lens. The tape gives me a way to handle something that is otherwise too small. 4. I set away in a safe place overnight for the epoxy to set hard.
