Yesterday I had a thread was moved out of the optics section to the Leica LTM section. The thread presented images from four different Summicrons, Mint collapsible, Mint Rigid, Coating damaged, and radiation damaged. Three of the lenses were M-Mount and one was LTM. The intent was to show the effects of the damage on color rendition.
I certainly would not have opened the thread in the LTM Forum, it did not belong there.M-Mount? Maybe. Three of the Six lenses were M-Mount. Canon Forum? I used the Canon P for some of the shots. LTM forum? I used two LTM cameras and two of three of the six lenses were LTM. But the thrust of the thread was to look at some the the reasons why color from a lens would be labeled "wishy washy".
ANYWAY: I do not understand why the thread was moved, and believe that the posting constraints for the Optics and Lenses forum are too stringent. It would be easier to loosen up on the posting requirements to that forum rather than moving threads to forums that they are even less appropriate. Less work for the moderators, less confusion for those posting the threads.
If the forum is indeed to be for pure technical discussions, I can abide by that. I will not post to the forum, but I can abide by it. RFF is for fun. I give enough technical briefings that make people's heads hurt.

I know what you mean, Brian. I had also threads moved away from the Optics and Lenses Forum. I also was in a similar position where it was unclear where to post the thread. It was not really about LTM or Canon ... etc.

Without looking each thread in the optics forum, their titles indicate there is more flexibility than afforded your thread. But what do I know. This is obviously a question for the moderators to answer.

Brian,
It certainly belongs in the the Optics and Lenses forum
and not in the LTM one

I was looking for any new posts to Brian's thread and it was gone. Many members here know that Brian is a lens guru and his posts are always interesting. Why wouldn't that thread have remained where it belonged in the optics forum?
It did not belong in the LTM forum, and I could not move it back, so I deleted it.
Long day, gave a brief that made many heads hurt, "RFF member may just delete thread rather than seeing it moved" to paraphrase.

i'd like to see brian have his own sub-forum for his lens hacking threads.
No Way! Then I would have Moderator Priviliges and the Typomatic Rate on the Delete button is not fast enough!
(I put most of my lens hacking projects here: http://ziforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=39)

Odd decision; too bad. I would have been interested but now we have, ummm, nothing. What's worse, "miscategorized" or nothing?

I like to see this thread and it does not matter which category it is posted in.

As good as Joe & Rover are, I don't think either has the qualifications in this department. Kim Coxin does, but he is seldom around. The head bartender might have moved it but I doubt it. Stephen seems to have a good knowledge of equipment, least in the history dept. so I'd be suprised if he did move it. I agree with Frank S, they should make Brian official lens guru optical super moderator.

"RFF is for fun" - I've taken this view for a long time ( but usually get my knuckles rapped for trying to inject some! ) - so does it really matter much if a thread gets moved?.Yesterday I had a thread was moved out of the optics section to the Leica LTM section. Optics and Lenses -
READ INSTRUCTIONS! This forum is aimed towards the technical side of photographic optics and lenses. There will be some overlap by camera/manufacturer, but this forum is for the heavy duty tech discussions. This is NOT the place to discuss a specific lens or lens line, do that in the appropriate forum. This is the forum to discuss optics or lenses in general, to learn about the tech behind the lenses and images. IF you have a question about a specific lens, post it in the forum about that type of camera, NOT HERE. Mods are tired of moving threads, and may just delete them instead.
It shouldn't really be a matter of "qualifications" being required to determine which forum a thread belongs... it seems more like the rules are too rigid and/or have too many loop-holes. Where a thread like the one the OP described belongs seems very much to be a matter of opinion. If Mods "get tired" moving threads maybe they should consider why so many seem get put in the wrong place and require such a peculiar admonishment... eh?
p.s. this is just an opinion for the sake of discussion, not a comment intended to be critical of the Mods or site owner.

"... so does it really matter much if a thread gets moved?
That's the other incredibly astute question, Dave!
Moving a thread requires Moderator action, enabling edit functions and selecting a course of action. It takes some time do do.
If the thread is so far from my intent that it requires Moderator Action, I will delete it rather than have it stay on RFF. I will repost the same information on a different forum. The Moderators can simply delete it rather than move it and save me the time. As stated up top on the Optics and Lenses forum.

Do whatever you feel you need to do... But don't you think Dave has an interesting question?

There are a million "Lens comparison" threads on this site, regardless of what mount - I stumble upon them everywhere. They are quite common but are scattered throughout.
Maybe there should be a separate "Threads for Lens Comparison". This would consolidate all of them and provide a good database for all of us. I understand that certain groups dictate where topics should go, that's fine but possibly the topic could be linked to the separate sub-forum.
It's just an idea and I think it would greatly aid users, especially new ones.

I think Jay has a good idea.
And Dave- I can be far more anal than whoever moved my thread. And proud of it.

i didn't move it.
Thanks Joe, for the reply. I figured you would not have.
I would like the rules for the Optics and Lenses forum "relaxed" so we do not run into this again. What passes "muster" in the weeks that I posted the thread must have been seen by one of the Mods as out of line with the forum. It's created a lot of confusion in my mind.
