Yes - I had noticed!I think Jay has a good idea.
And Dave- I can be far more anal than whoever moved my thread. And proud of it.
Just to be clear- I regard my self as a "Lens Tinkerer" and no where near a lens guru.
In my career, I have had two "real Lens Gurus" work for me. They developed custom optics for 1960s LASERS, optical computers, imaging sensors, and early digital cameras. I loved to watch them work. More than once, I contributed to the discussion. One time, the Senior Optical Engineer was performing Ray Trace calculations on a lens with multiple aspheric surfaces and was annoyed because the company did not provide enough precision of the coefficients of the 5th order polynomial used to approximate the "wiggle" (his words) of the surface. My contribution "Bernie, the CCD only has 320x200 resolution, and it just does not matter".
If I come up with anything "truly" technical for the Optics and Lenses forum, I'll put it there. I'll put my tinkering projects on ziforums.com or other less technical forums and cite them here as appropriate.

Where is it now I'd like to read it? I can't find it in LTM. EDIT: Sorry, I guess it has been deleted.

I forgot the funny ending to my Bernie story.
That evening, I went home and tore apart a Kodak Ektasound 130 Super-8 Movie Camera that I bought at a yard sale for 50cents to get the 9mm F1.2 prime lens and viewfinder optics from it. The CCD was about the same size as the Super-8 frame. A week later, Bernie tells me "That lens was pretty good. And the other ones were nice molded optics. Can we get about 50 more of them." He had some made up much like them.
Lens Tinkering- my department.

Proposed change to Otics and Lenses forum rules.
Proposed change to Otics and Lenses forum rules.
Optics and Lenses -
This forum is aimed towards the technical side of photographic optics and lenses, including lens repair/tinkering and comparisons of technical specifications or imaging characteristics. There may be some overlap with discussions posted to specific camera/manufacturer forums, but this forum is primarily oriented toward the heavier-duty tech discussions. IF you have a question about a specific lens from a specific manufacturer, post it in the forum about that type of camera. This is NOT the best place to discuss a specific lens or lens line unless it is a modification or comparison disucssion; do all general enquiries (like "what should I buy?", "how many should I own?", "which do you think is better"") in the appropriate forum. This is the forum to discuss optics or lenses in general, to learn about the technology behind the lenses and the resulting images.
The solution seems easy to me.

Ed, you forgot to mention the "just fun" part! after reading this thread.....god knows what would have happened if it had concerned something serious!Optics and Lenses -

I agree with you Brian. Still a pity that you deleted the thread - punishes all of us not just whoever moved your thread. I usually find RFF stuff with google independent of the forum ...

I´ve been active on a number of other forums (none photography related), and these types of problems increase in direct proportion with the number of sub-forums. Until one comes to a crux, where one no longer can post in any forum without transgressing the limits of the forum, at which point all posts end up in the "general discussions forum", which defeats the purpose of sub-forums
I moved it back to optics, undeleted the thread, and added Comparison to the title.

Stephen- Thankyou.
Dave, about 30 years ago I caught a Scientist stealing my computer work using the mainframe system that we shared. I "hex patched" one of my programs so that the mainframe computer believed that it was part of the operating system. And I placed a loop in it that overwrote all of the memory on the computer. The computer was very big, and required a warehouse to fit in. I moved all of my real files and set them so they would delete any process but mine trying to access them, and set up a dummy structure in the open that the guy stole again. Took him two days to figure out he was crashing the mainframe everytime he ran the stolen code. I am not a lens guru. I do know computers. One time I wrote a FORTRAN code that overloaded the power supplies on a $130,000 computer and it caught on fire. But that was an accident.
