I'm currently using a Canoscan 8600F for all my 35mm scanning and to be honest I find the results pretty good, certainly better than I would expect from a flatbed. However I now need to produce the highest quality scans I can and I'm starting to wonder about how much of an improvement a dedicated film scanner would be. Now I'm quite aware that if money was no object then I could invest in a very expensive machine that will produce better results however, I have a tight budget so I would be looking at something like a Plustek 7200 sort of price range. So the question is, do I keep the Canon or will a dedicated film scanner give me better results at the end of the day?

Try Betterscanning holders and then fluid mounting first. Your Canon scanner may be better than you think. also, have you mad large prints from the Canon scans? That is the only way to judge the quality of a scan.
