Hi

Has anyone tried the an LTM elmar collapsible

will the elmar collapsible lens fit on the G1 with an adapter - or does the body extent too far back into the camera, (maybe touching the sensor), when the lens is retracted back.

I suppose the same question goes for the collapsible M mount elmar

Thanks

You can use the collapsible lenses, but you shouldn't collapse them.

Thanks, wow that was quick

old habits die hard - can I be trusted not to collapse the lens - no I do not think that I can - now that would be an expensive mistake - I better steer clear - pity?

- unless I just stick some tape around the barrel so that it would be impossible to collapse the lens - well in that case I should give it a try?

Thanks again

Just a quick note- you can safely collapse the 50mm summicron on an E-P1- as far as I'm aware the mount area is part of the m4/3 standard so it should be fine on the panasonic cameras too. The rear of the lens (when collapsed) is still 3-4mm shy of the rear of the adapter so there's plenty of room I think.

that's sounds good - I picked up a 50mm f3.5 from 1933 last year and would love to see how it performs on a G1 that I have just bought

I am not expecting great things, but maybe something special which I may prefer to the technically sharp digital images

I got a 14 45 Lumix lens with the G1 about a week ago, I am just a keen enthusiast,, i.e. in no way an expert, but I seem to be using, (and preferring), my old Nikkor MF glass - using a 35mm f2 Nikkor O.C most of the time, to the Panasonic lens.

If truth has it, the main reason I bought the G1 was that I wanted to use my Nikkor MF glass on a digital "rangefinder" sized body.
Now deciding on another couple of adapters as i have some LTM lenses plus M42 pentax.

Quite exciting really - this M4/3 concept, that is allowing lots of experimentation with older glass., but for me, I do not think it will replace my Nikon D300 - but the M4/3 concept is a great "complimentary" channel to what we all now have - so much choice these days

Thanks again

I don't see how you could collapse an Elmar into the G1. There is the same distance to the sensor as to a Leica's film plain or sensor, so in theory the rear tube wouldn't touch the sensor, but there is a baffle and electrical contacts in the way on both the EP-1 and G1.Steve

won't it depend on the size of the adapter - i.e. the lens barrel could collapse into the adapter - the M4/3 to Nikon F adaptor that I have is almost 2.75 cm long and it collapses into that with room to spare.
to be safe it needs a tad over 2 cm of adapter "length"

Just cut a piece of thin cardboard (like the back side of a 3x5 card), wind it around the barrel, and tape the ends together. It will prevent you from collapsing it.

The size of the adapter (depth) is determined by the original depth of the body so the rear element to film/sensor surface remains the same and the lens can focus to infinity. That distance for a Leica M adapter is about 8mm, not 27.5mm like a Nikon F adapter!

It is possible, and works quite nicely (this is my Elmar 2.8 with Milich adapter):

but I have not collapsed it because of fears about hitting the electrical contacts or the sensor.

Yes and its fine - check my testing 50s thread below, it was amongst those i tested

Well OK, it may be the case that the LTM Elmar can collapse into the body of the G1, but the last version of the Elmar M definitely cannot. I have it on my desk right now and its impossible.
