All is well, really. One republican senator objected to a voice vote Friday. Next week when there is a full house quorm it will be restored.

The serious issue is long term. The stimulus was wasted largely. They spent a year on health care and not on jobs. They are saying now 24 months until we see jobs.

In the mean time the financial wizards on Wall Street continue with derivitives and inside trading putting the system back at risk. Treasury will bail them again with public funds that do not exist.

Right now profits are private, losses are public reimbersed and the big bankers get obsene bonuses for being such savy businessmen.

PRETTY GOOD SYSTEM FOR A FEW. The rest can go scratch.

I could write for hours with tons of details, but you get the picture.

If you ever made $60,000 or so with no deductions, you might think differently. I do understand the working poor voting to pick my pocket though, which is why I voted the other side to keep their hands out of my pockets.

Now that I'm almost working poor myself, it's time to add my vote to the pocket pickers...

No, I won't. You see, I believe that all Americans have a right to a decent life. THe poor exist for one reason alone: our country's rulers profit from keeping others hungry, sick and poor. History clearly shows that such a situation eventually leads the poor to kill the bloodsuckers who keep them down. It also shows that a country with a large unemployed/underemployed class of highly educated young men is in even bigger danger of the poor killing you, because large scale organized killing needs leaders. Educated young people with no prospects in life make excellent leaders whose own poverty drains away any respect for human life they may have had before. The result? Millions die. Russia's 1917 revolution, China's 1949 revolution, the Pol Pot revolution in Cambodia.....all examples.

I'd rather not see this happen in my country. I fear that it will in my lifetime unless people wake up.

You really should move someplace else (another country), you are just not a happy person living in the United States.

Got a better idea, how 'bout we get jacka--es like Bunning, who are playing politics at (as aways) the suffering of others, and have them move out of the country? Preferably tarred and feathered, old school.

As far as not passing such legislation because it's not funded, where's the money come from etc... what an absolute joke. Pointless, stupid war like Iraq costing trillions based on the naive and moronic ideology of "neoconservatism" ? Blank check. But extending UE benefits to productive, educated members of our society due to one of the worst recessions in the history of the nation (thanks in no small part to the failed right-wing "free market takes care of everything" ideologies)? Now watch these creeps all cry poor and suddenly start getting all concerned about deficits. One does not have to dig very deep to unearth the hilarious hypocrisy of these clowns, 'course it won't seem that way if the only perspective you're willing to consider comes from some loudmouth on AM hate-jock radio, like Glenn Beck...

"Bunning Has Voted Extensions Of Unemployment With No Offsets In The Past At Least Twice. Bunning voted for the fiscal 2008 war supplemental bill, which extended unemployment insurance benefits for 13 weeks. Bunning also supported ending debate and didn’t object to the voice vote of a measure to extend unemployment benefits for an additional seven weeks for workers who had exhausted their current compensation by March 31, 2009. The bill also extended benefits for an additional 13 weeks, or half the duration of regular unemployment compensation, for workers in states with unemployment rates of 6 percent or higher. These extensions did not have budget offsets. Objecting To Extending Unemployment Benefits Part Of Republican Pattern. The last time the Senate extended unemployment, Republicans objected three times, with Kyl objecting once and McConnell objecting twice. The extension of those unemployment insurance benefits was completely paid for “by extending the Federal Unemployment Tax through June 30, 2011.” [Congressional Record, 10/8/09, 10/26/09, 10/29/09; Senate Finance Committee, 10/8/09] ➢ Republicans Wanted Votes On ACORN, E-Verify On Last UI Extension.McConnell objected to passing the unemployment benefits.

And while we're at it, here's the list of creeps who voted against repealing health insurance companies antitrust exemption, all "R's" of course. Yeah - they really represent Americans. Only not Americans who are real people, just Americans who are of the "corporate" legal standing.

Here's the 19 Republicans who chose to stick w/ the insurance companies in the vote to repeal the antitrust exemption currently enjoyed by health insurance companies: Akin (KS), Boehner (OH), Brady (TX), Broun (GA), Buyer (IN), Franks (AZ), Garrett (NJ), Jenkins (KS), Jordan (OH), King (IA), Lamborn (CO), Linder (GA), Moran (KS), Paul (TX) Price (GA), Ryan (WI), Sensenbrenner (WI), Tiahrt (KS) and Westmoreland (GA)

... bet they're all opposed to fixing our 37th ranked health care system, that leaves nearly 20% of Americans without health care coverage, and has - by far, the most expensive system in the indutrialized world at 15.3% of GDP, and shockingly, leave 35%(!) of males between the ages of 20-29 without coverage.

The election was in 1968. If Bob Kennedy had not been murdered, Nixon would not have been elected.
And if JFK hadn't been murdered, we wouldn't have had the expense of the Great Society and the lost War on Poverty. Most of you believe in a welfare state and I don't; so we differ.

I do feel sorry for Dave, but many of these downturn problems were created by our government: liar loans (Fannie, Freddie), too low interest rates that were championed by Greenspan. Dave really should have a vision that is a little broader than to blame one lone Senator.

I'm not against the Bunning removal as long as Barbara Streisand goes too.

To the OP - I am really sorry for you and your family. I pray that your wife gets better soon and that you find a job that you not only need but are happy with...

Yep, this thread pretty much sums up the mood of the country right now... It's your fault! No, it's YOUR fault! The Republicans are bitter about losing the last election (John McCain made a fool of himself at the health care summit, twice) and the Democrats...well, lets face it, can't do anything even with a super majority.

Without a doubt, at this very moment the Republicans are hurting the country more than helping it. The Party of No is running out of steam because they passed up on folks that make fiscal sense (Ron Paul) for folks that write on their hands. I like real Republicans, I think they bring fiscal responsibility to the table. That is a GOOD thing. But, I have not seen a real Republican in a long, long time. We need the Dem's, many times they are the only ones that speak up for the poor. That is a GOOD thing. Hmm... Sounds like the right time for a third party, no?

Actually, I think JFK would have passed some of what we now call the "Great Society" had he been re-elected.

Me, I blame ALL of them, DNC and GOP both. Time for a "vote 'em out" fest....

Barbara Steisand has no political power. She's not stopping people who are struggling under the current economic conditions and are dangerously close to being the subject of "Leica shooters" (see "Homeless" thread) - and will be, if callous idiots like "Bunning" (R- what else?) have their way. She has her perspective, which she is entitled to. Or would you see all those who don't share your (incorrect) political perspective "move out of the country"? Very American opinion you got there. And what's this obsession with the political perspective of celebs anyway? Again, they are not elected officials. I'd concern myself more with those guys.

Nick, Bunning has his prespective, too. So, you get rid of your irritation and I get rid of mine. Sounds like you are right with me on your 'Very American opinion.'

Yep, like every downturn we've had since the 20s.

Carlos is right...where are the real Republicans? Well, one of them is standing up and saying 'let's not spend until we know where the money is coming from.' Is that such a bad thing?

Out of control spending is killing the country in short order. I say throw out the entire batch, both R and D, and start over.

Thanks Robert! Someone agrees with me! That never seems to happen. Ok, here is what we should do... Start the RFF Party!

Vote RFF in 2012! We promise an American made Leica in every home! (not sure how we would do this but I would vote for it!)

I want a beer too; as I also agree with Carlos. In fact, I take it back I'll buy the beer

I gotta say I feel for your position, but good god man.

I paid into unemployment for decades. When I claim it I'm not "pocket-picking," I'm claiming what I put in over the years. I put in willingly, less as "insurance" but more because my life is better when there aren't dead people in the street every morning. I don't want to live in a society where people with jobs think everyone without a job should just die.

You already have received a year and a half of benefits. Don't bitch. Yes it sucks and no I don't have any ideas, but maybe think about what you are facing the next time you rise above the working poor.

I've not had a real paycheck for 9 months now, and I don't get squat for benefits. But I'm not on here screaming about how I'm not getting my due. And when I am getting paid, I don't begrudge the taxes I also pay. I'm just glad I don't need all the help and services my taxes provide. And I do enjoy the benefits of good roads, sewers, power, water, police, fire stations, etc. etc. etc. And the more I get paid, the more I'm benefitting from those services, so it only seems right to put more towards them.

But I do agree that holding up unemployment benefits is dumb. Without those funds, far fewer people will be able to support their local businesses. If a person actually cared about the fate of businesses and the quality of life in their community, they'd be in favor of gov't spending. Especially in a bad economy. As has been said, there are more appropriate spending issues to question. Where was this guy when the vote to spend billions upon billions on military exercises came up ten years ago?

Um, I got *NOTHING* from unemployment. nada, zilch., ZERO! Why do you think I now want to pick pockets? Fortunately, I had a big chunk of cash I saved, plus a bit from an aunt who passed away, or I'd be living in a box. The OP has received over a year of unemployment, which I'm sure he paid into and deserved.

And BTW, my current pay is so low, all I pay is Social Security and Medicare. I don't even make enough to actually pay federal income tax. Now, when I made a lot of money, I used to see maybe 55 cent out of every dollar I earn. Now, it's more like 90...

Ah, downward mobility. gotta love it...

?

The Bush administration and republican congress should be tried for incompetence. Them - and only them, dereulated the financial services industry then failed to provide any oversight whatsoever. "The free market is self-regulating..." - failed and naive ideology.

Here's Greenspan admitting before congress "he was wrong..." regarding that whole "free market" thing:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWen53eqmJo

Meanwhile, their other failed ideology "neoconservatism" was costing us 10's of thousands of lives and will cost trillions of dollars when all said and done in Iraq in their stupid desire to democratize the Middle East via the mysterious "domino effect"...

So, the economy is in the crapper thanks to them and their failed ideologies, and it's the average citizen who pays the high price. Opps... sorry, can't extend UE benefits - deficits donchya know...(But pointless wars? Always seems to be a blank check for that...) Shame, you can't afford to eat. Sorry to hear you don't have health care coverage... Worried about losing your home? Don't worry, be happy :) Nah... doesn't look like we can extend those UE benefits... Haven't you heard of "rugged individualism"(tm) and "personal responsibility"(tm)... It's your fault, you made bad choices! What a load of crap.

They're disgusting, they're idiots. They should be collectively brought up on charges and sued as you would any other person who has the responsiblity of managing something and through their own gross negligence caused harm to you and others.

I will agree with you on one point, the Middle East is a lost cause, next to nothing as far as human produced GDP (if you exclude Israel), so why even bother with the place.
