Panasonic 14-45 mm F3.5.5.6 Lenses

Hello,
I am new to the group and have a Paniasonic GF1 with the 20 mm kit lens. I now see that there are 2 14-45 mm lenses available a Lumix G Vario 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 ASPH Mega O.I.S. H-FS014042 and the older model that is a H-FS014045. From what I can tell the new one is lighter and looses the metal mount and the af-switch which is now handled by the camera. Does anyone know which one is better?

I believe that Panasonic themselves said the new one should "approach" the performance of the new one. That sounds to me like it's a hair inferior.

I own the first version and I must say it's shockingly good for what it is.

Enjoy your GF-1! Great camera and the 20mm is one spectacular little piece of glass. Try and make it flare, it's not easy :)

I'll just add to the 14-45mm fan club, its a terrific performer. I think the new 14-42mm lens is aimed at the new cameras and getting weight right down, but like others I get the impression its not a replacement for the 14-45mm, but a cheaper alternative.

Well, I see my mistake. Amazon lists both lenses as being 14 to 45 mm and from their descriptions you really can't tell which is which because they don't give both Model numbers. I tracked that down after looking at the Global Lumix Site. I have placed an order for the 14 - 45 with the metal mount. As someone who has worked on Professional DLSR's I wonder about the stability and alignment of a non-metal mount. We had a special Nikon fixture with a dial indicator to check that the sensor and lens mount on the camera were in perfect alignment. Let me tell you that after replacing the shutter it took several hours to get it right..!

There is also a third option which is the Leica D Vario-Elmar Standard Zoom Lens 14-50mm / F3.8-5.6 ASPH. / MEGA O.I.S. L-RS014050.

This lens does require you to have the DMW-MA1 adaptor mount.
