Looks like the len's character is well balanced. I love the not so clinical sharpness and slightly lower contrast that can lift shadows and tones are great as well. Btw, is this the latest Elmar before Leica stopped production?
 
I know what you mean, there was a lot of angst around collapsing it with the M8. Every time I do it, I feel a little nervous.

BTW, I am using the bridge grip now and it's great, the camera really feels secure. But they have changed the design. The grip blocks the battery door so I have to take it off. I saw your pictures and can see there is adequate clearance.

i love that grip, too bad the design was changed, i wonder why they did that.
if you have the time, i'd appreciate a quick snap of what the new version looks like.

Here it is, I think the one I have is a newer design (got it used). I believe the machining around the screw slot is different and the end of yours is more rounded to accommodate the battery door. The ones on the bay look like this now.

too bad they changed that small detail...you could probably dremel away enough to allow the door to open.
 
I used a micrometer to measure the depth of the fully collapsed lens at infinity and the depth of the baffles from the mount surface. There is just enough clearance to prevent the two touching. But anyone who wants to try it should carefully test for themselves! 🙂

Regarding the grip - I think I can live with it the way it is. I know the R-D1 batteries don't fall out easily, so I rather just take it off than bang on the camera to get it to drop out.
